About Xiu Fang

I'm a teacher. I have been giving private and group lessons since 2002. I have a degree in Education and Philosophy, also a certificate in NLP and Public Speaking. I teach Chinese at the University of Adelaide and Vocational Language Learning Center. I am also a volunteer English Tutor at Talk To Aussie-University of Adelaide and TAFE SA.

About the lesson

I am an organized and passionate individual, motivated to teach and share my own extensive knowledge and experience with others. I have a Bachelor of Education and a Bachelor of Philosophy, also a Certificate II of NLP and Public Speaking. As a professional teacher, I offer an engaging learning experience, a relaxed and pleasant atmosphere, also able to offer online teaching by using Skype or Zoom in the current situation. I believe a good teacher should understand and know the student's needs and level, to be able to apply different teaching methods. My teaching is structured with a focus more on speaking and listening practice by using class time effectively, and practice writing and reading more as homework. I encourage my students to use WeChat to learn the Chinese language and culture. I often use a pattern to increase memory and vocabulary building. My goal is to help my students achieve their best in Chinese language learning.

Lao Tzu a famous author of the TaoTeChing. He is the found today philosophical Taoism. The important Taoist principles are simplicity and follow the law of nature, living with harmony with it.
Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?
A thousand miles begins with a single step.
Why does speaking this language matter to you?
It's my mother tongue, Communicate with my family and friends. And keep connection with culture ~ which is my root. Plus 1/3 of the global population speak the language. According to UNESCO status there were about 1.6 billion Chinese speakers in 2017 ranking first in the world in terms of the language use.
What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?
Chinese writing system is completely different from alphabet system.
Chinese is a tonal language. When the language with passion of the culture and the custom. Immersion can be the fastest way to learn the language, practice speaking daily even with as little as 20 minutes a day.
Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.
When I studied at a college, once I used a word which I've heard often between students in front of my teacher, her face suddenly turned red and looked shocked! I knew straight away that was wrong word to say, or at least not to older teachers! So it's very important to understand the culture when learning the language.
How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?
-Traveling allows me to understand the culture of the country better. Best way of learning a language is from local experience.
-To Connect and communicate with local people, immersing myself in the language daily events, practice and improve the skill faster.
-To have a genuine understanding about the history and customs of the language.
