About James
I am a recently retired educator who taught for thirty years in secondary (high school), post secondary (university) and commercial/business environments. I envision history and related subjects such as anthropology as the story of everything - from the formation of the universe, to the appearance of life on the planet to the rise and progress of civilizations and the arts and sciences associated with them.

I am a teacher that makes a sharp distinction between "training" and "educating". While I can train a seal to balance a ball on the end of its nose, I cannot help it appreciate the beauty of Athena Nike, the mathematical symmetry of the Parthenon or the astronomical achievements of the peoples of ancient Mesopotamia or Egypt. My job as an effective educator is to spark wonder about the world in my students. That is true education.
I note that I often teach American, European and sometimes even world history in short segments as well as in reverse time. That is, I may begin with those things (i.e. places, events, technologies, etc.) the student is most familiar with at the present and work backward in time. In this way I hope to show the student that most things under the sun are not new, but result from an accumulation of knowledge that preceded them. This also tends to help younger students better relate to the passage of time because they can see that many things they know or experience are really not so ancient after all.
