About Sebastian
I think Biology is much more interesting when you understand why something happens rather than just memorising a list of facts. That’s the approach I try to bring to my teaching.
Outside of Biology, most of my time is spent playing music. I play piano, violin and organ, and I’ve performed regularly over the years. I’m also a keen fencer, so I’m used to spending a lot of time working at something, making mistakes and gradually getting better. I think that has made me quite patient when teaching too if something doesn’t make sense straight away, there’s usually another way of explaining it.
I want my students to leave a lesson feeling that a topic which seemed complicated at the beginning now makes sense. I also place a strong emphasis on examination technique. Understanding Biology is only part of the challenge; being able to communicate that understanding precisely in an exam is equally important. I therefore like to combine explanations with discussion, problem-solving and exam-style questions, rather than spending an entire lesson talking at the student.

I focus on helping students understand Biology rather than simply memorising mark schemes. My lessons are tailored to each student, combining clear explanations of difficult concepts with exam-style questions, active recall and targeted feedback.
A typical lesson lasts an hour. I usually begin by identifying areas the student is struggling with, then work through the underlying concepts before applying them to exam questions. I also encourage students to explain ideas in their own words, as this is a good way of identifying gaps in understanding and building confidence.
I am a first-year Biology undergraduate at Imperial College London. I achieved an A* in A-level Biology, as well as 9s in the 2 other sciences and maths. I have also had experience supporting and mentoring younger students academically.
My lessons are aimed primarily at GCSE and A-level Biology students, although I am happy to work with younger students who want to build a strong foundation in Biology. I can also help students with exam preparation, revision planning and developing effective study techniques.
