About Matthew

I was raised by two lifelong teachers and educationalists. My father taught History for 40 years at an independent school in Cambridgeshire, and by the end of his career was the Director of Studies of the school. My mother taught for 10 years before she became an OFSTED inspector, receiving many promotions until she became a Lead Inspector of this region of England. I have been inspired by their example, as well as the education I was privileged enough to receive as a child, and wish to pass that on to young people. As a young GCSE student, I often felt uncertain about my goals and direction. It was only when I discovered philosophy, as part of Religious Education, that I truly knew I had found my calling, which also nurtured a growing passion for learning and understanding political philosophy and the early Greek and Roman roots of Western thought. I love these subjects with a passion. I believe they mould us into the kinds of men and women we are, and our sense of who we want to be as we mature and develop. Mastering them, developing a deep understanding of the principles of ethical life, the wisdom of religious traditions, and the competing, rival visions of a good society are crucial for any well-rounded, educated future British citizen. I really hope to impart a strong passion for these subjects to my tutees.

About the lesson

My qualifications: BA in Philosophy & Politics, 1st Class Honours with Distinction LLM in Legal & Political Theory, 1st Class Honours with Distinction Experience: I spent a year tutoring first-year undergraduates in the History of Political Philosophy, essentially a 101 lesson to ensure that all new undergraduates have a working background knowledge of the area, given that not all would have studied it at A Level. I taught, gave presentations, ran seminars, marked and graded undergraduate essays, and provided detailed feedback to students. Lesson approach: I will personalise all lessons to hone in on the particular areas where you, the student, feel you need to improve and strengthen your knowledge and confidence. I will tailor them for your particular level of confidence, experience, and whether you're a GCSE or A Level pupil. My experience both as a former pupil and as a former seminar tutor is that the two key things holding back most promising young pupils are two things: a lack of confidence, and a broader sense of how individual concepts and thinkers form a larger, coherent picture, and my personal approach aims to rectify both of these issues, both by enabling pupils to really confidently master the material and to do so by seeing how they form part of a larger, coherent whole. Lessons will be 60 minutes per.
