About Tasha

Who am I and why do I want to teach? In my eight year vocational training in classical ballet, every morning at 7am we had half an hour yoga practice before breakfast. This was from the age of ten until I left the school at eighteen. It was a practice that took you through every part of the body. Every joint, ligament, tendon and limb was gently awakened in preparation for the day's work that lay ahead. As a professional dancer my focus was purely on ballet and dance, but once I retired from ballet I needed to continue to support my body and so my deeper studies of yoga began. I started out with the Sivananda School of Yoga in Putney and from there my own daily practice naturally developed moving through classical yoga, Vinyasa Flow, Ashtanga and Yin. My interest in yoga continued to flourish as I grew older and my practice supported me throughout my ballet teaching years right up to where I am now. During these years I have discovered many benefits to combining yoga and dance that keep the body toned, flexible, strong and healthy. Now I move into 'the mature woman' stage of life, and with it I offer a practice of elegance and grace through the combination of yoga and ballet, moving the body with the energy of the breath. I have been teaching dancers and non dancers how to move since 2006.

Over the many years of practice as a professional ballet dancer and yoga practitioner, I have discovered more and more benefits to combining dance/ballet with yoga. I like to use the power of yoga asanas with the breath to release and open up areas of the body that may have become restricted, tired or injured from the ongoing requirements ballet demands. This becomes even more apparent as you grow older and your body requires additional attention to the way in which you work it. Before I start any body work with a new student, we will go through a series of questions in order to acquire a full and detailed understanding of where you are at with your body and in your stage of life in general. This way we can work together to get the best results for your needs. Generally we begin with stillness; usually lying out flat on your back and connecting to the very essence of your body and your own internal energy. In this way the mind can work safely with the body as it listens and learns where assistance is needed. So often a trained dancer wants to push the body beyond limits to achieve desires and I like to find the deeper place within, that can nurture and heal areas of stress, that could otherwise be ignored. This approach can naturally have a positive effect on your mind, enabling you to feel more connected, calmer and in control of how you move and carry yourself through life in and out of the studio. An hour lesson is usually enough time to address the entire body leaving you feeling relaxed, open, nurtured and yet still nicely worked. An hour and a half is another option to include a wind down to full relaxation, allowing your body to absorb and assimilate all you have given it. Finishing with a delicious moment of gratification.
