As part of teaching driving skills, I found it helpful to take my students on a drive and discuss the exact things I am doing while driving and if I made a mistake or do something contrary to the written rules. I would explain why I made that judgment call and how I could improve next time. Showing accountability and updating my driving in support of safety and future outings.
The lessons would be watching videos of people in the driver's seat. And starting to name and notice things as if a person is a driver. This is how a driver has to think. A driver at times may even ignore or tell their friends to be quiet because the driving task takes priority. This can also be noticing where the person is looking while driving. Are they distracted? What can we tell about the driver from watching the video? What are good things to remember from it?
It also involves going section by section of the book and speaking aloud the section, or having the client in their own words talk about it. It might be quizzing them as they watch the driving video. What does that sign mean? Is there something you would recommend this driver do differently and why? Are there concerns you have regarding when you are in the car with others? What are the rules pedestrians are supposed to follow and don't? Etc..
The goal is to get the client to ask good questions regarding driving, ask people who drive them about driving and build a breadth of driving knowledge in a multifaceted way so even if someone has test anxiety, they can recall just one of the methods used to train a specific topic.
