About Prince

I was a vocal soloist in middle school, blessed to have developed under the same outstanding choral instructor throughout the remainder of grade school. I capped off my high school years by playing notable roles in musicals such as Guys and Dolls, Little Shop of Horrors, and starred as Kenickie in Ardrey Kell high school's 2008 rendition of the popular musical, Grease. I was a singer and songwriter in a 3-part award-winning band that played throughout North Carolina. I played in a band throughout high school and much of college. When I wasn't performing with them, I was performing as part of other bands, on stage as an actor, or organizing concerts and stage shows. I began learning to play guitar in 2015 then eventually performed throughout HCMC, VN venues as a singer, songwriter and emcee with active producers, rappers, singers instrumentalists and writers. I've collaborated in music studios with other musicians. I've also released my own music. After seven years abroad, I am back in the USA to share expertise, teach others, network and make more music along the way! I must say, time under tension truly does make a difference. Whether we're learning to play guitar or we're learning to sing, my lessons and prescribed practice regimens guarantee that learners will obtain familiarity with key elements of music theory. They will gain the confidence to learn or practice independently and at their own pace. This lifetime in performing arts combined with my more recent experience as a 7-year veteran ESL educator helps me clearly communicate my understanding to all skill levels. Ongoing dedication will have my students reading sheet music, writing, and performing signature melodies of their own and of their favorite artists/songs.

Before referring back to my comfort zone of sheet music, I approached Guitar education by looking at the guitar as a blank canvas. Though, I wouldn’t advise this for complete beginners or people who desire to learn quickly, this approach helped me gain familiarity with the instrument in ways that would eventually make all instruments seem similar.

In a more condensed and practical format, I like to take what I’ve learned and bridge the gap between music theory and music instruments. In this manner, I will teach subjects ranging from ‘Purpose behind guitar architecture’ to ‘Jazz chords: why they’re played, how they’re built, and how they’re used’.

Entertaining my wisdom for even a segment of your journey will help you appreciate the simplicity, complexity, and similarity in the relationship between these wooden and metal sound-making tools that we call instruments, in un-imaginable ways…

  • 1) When did you first develop a passion for music and your favorite instrument?

I was told that I was 5 years old when I first expressed such enthusiasm, requesting to sing 'Jesus Loves Me' at our church's Christmas recital.
  • 2) Is there a particular type of music or artist that you listen to on a loop without it driving you crazy?

    Classical
  • 3) Explain to us the most difficult or riveting course you could personally give to a student of music.

How to write emotionally-driven melodies and chord progressions using note intervals and chord assignments.
  • 4) What do you think is the most complicated instrument to master and why?

There are so many possibilities when playing the guitar, so, the guitar. I'm probably biased though. Otherwise, I would say the violin. The likelihood of playing unpleasantly high frequency sounds, as a beginner, could make for a steep learning curve.
  • 5) What are your keys to success?

Direction, organization, resiliency, humility, and PRACTICE! Time under tension is key.
  • 6) Name three musicians you'd be interested in meeting. Explain why.

Anderson .Paak, Tom Misch, Thundercat, and Kendrick Lamar. I know I was prompted to only state three, but there are way too many artists to choose from, old and new! I would like to meet them, because they're all uniquely talented, contemporary musicians and artists who are likely inspired by my inspirations. All of whom I would probably enjoy learning from and working with.
  • 7) Provide a valuable anecdote related to music or your days at music school.

An interestingly random choice for a Grade 7 dude, I sang "I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor at my chamber choir's school recital. As if the bright green cummerbunds weren't awesome enough, the audience was apparently entertained when I stepped down from the risers to sing the song, but I was more surprised when my voice cracked while singing the intro. Needless to say, I made a smooth transition into the appropriate register, (safely) jumped off the stage, and performed my heart out while interacting with the audience. I heard about how fun and funny those moments were for years on. Someone will probably read this and still laugh with me today. Nothing like a public coming-of-age moment!
  • 8) What are the little touches that make you a Superprof in music?

I have genuine interest to help other community members advance and enjoy their passions regardless of where they are located. Aside from that, as well as, my patience, graded language, due diligence, knowledge, wisdom, skills, potential, and all of the prior teaching experience, I truly know that my students have even more priceless moments to offer me in my own journey! I will be doing this for the rest of my life!
