About Tim
Industrial rock caught my attention through a college friend's chaotic vinyl collection, its harsh textures oddly fascinating rather than off-putting to me. Neo soul entered much later, discovered accidentally while searching for something to unwind to after long recording sessions. Learning to appreciate both extremes eventually shaped a teaching style comfortable with contrast rather than sameness. That comfort now extends naturally to teaching students with equally varied schedules and backgrounds.
Homeschooled teens and career professionals both bring unusual flexibility to lessons, something I've learned to actually plan around rather than ignore. Standard weekly lesson structures rarely fit either group perfectly, so I stay adaptable session to session. What I enjoy most is watching a professional visibly decompress through a slow neo soul groove after a stressful week. That quiet transformation, from tense to relaxed, feels like real teaching success to me.
I still explore both industrial rock and neo soul personally, often during odd hours when creative energy hits unexpectedly. Staying curious this way keeps my teaching genuinely fresh rather than repetitive or formulaic. Lessons often shift toward whichever style matches a student's current mood or energy level that week. My hope remains constant, that students find real personal expression, not just technical correctness, in their playing.

Homeschooled teens and working professionals share one thing in common, oddly flexible schedules that let lessons dig deeper than typical weekly sessions allow. Industrial rock's mechanical, driving riffs open early classes, their repetitive structure making complex sounding patterns surprisingly approachable for newer players. Neo soul chord extensions follow later, stretching students toward richer, jazzier voicings once basic comfort settles in. Both styles push against ordinary strumming, rewarding students willing to think slightly differently about rhythm and tone.
As technique builds, I contrast industrial rock's tight, almost robotic timing against neo soul's looser, behind the beat feel, letting students physically sense the difference. Working professionals often gravitate toward neo soul's smoother demands, finding it a welcome contrast to rigid workday structure. Homeschooled teens, meanwhile, tend to enjoy industrial rock's heavier, more aggressive energy during longer, unhurried practice blocks. I weave in ear training throughout, since both styles depend heavily on subtle tonal shifts rather than obvious chord changes.
Deep, unrushed practice sessions tend to work better here than short scattered ones, given the flexible schedules involved. I encourage students to lean into that flexibility rather than rushing through material unnecessarily. Songs pulled from genres students already admire keep sessions personally engaging throughout. My focus stays fixed on building real tonal awareness, not just mechanical finger movement.
