About Penny

I’m a Scotland-based freelance Producer with over 10 years’ experience working across film, television, commercials and branded content.

I started out as a Production Assistant and worked my way up through production before becoming a Producer, so I’ve experienced lots of different sides of the job along the way. These days, my work ranges from independent films and television to large commercial productions, both in the UK and internationally.

Recent projects include producing the upcoming independent feature Fight Me, plus two romcom features alongside commercial work for brands including Red Bull, Hilton Hotels and Jura Whisky. I’ve also worked across BBC television productions and am currently part of the Women in Film & Television Four Nations Mentoring Scheme.

One of the things I really enjoy about producing is figuring out how to actually make something happen – taking an idea or a script and working through the budget, schedule, crew, locations and all the other moving parts that eventually get you to a shoot.

I know that side of filmmaking can feel pretty daunting when you’re starting out, particularly when it feels like everyone else already knows what they’re doing! I’d love to be able to pass on some of what I’ve learnt over the years and give emerging filmmakers somewhere they can ask questions, talk through a project and get practical advice.

I’m very friendly and informal in my approach, and there genuinely are no silly questions. You don’t need to know all the terminology or have everything figured out before we chat – that’s kind of the point!

About the lesson

My sessions are practical, friendly and tailored to whatever you’re currently trying to make or understand. Rather than following a set syllabus, we’ll focus on the areas of film production you need help with – whether that’s building a realistic budget, creating a schedule, finding and managing crew, locations and logistics, preparing for a shoot, or simply working out where to start.

I’m a working freelance Producer with over 10 years’ experience across film, television, commercials and branded content. I’ve produced independent feature films and short films, alongside larger commercial productions in the UK and internationally, and have experience taking projects from early development and budgeting right through to production and delivery.

I’ve also delivered training on micro-budget filmmaking and enjoy helping emerging filmmakers understand the practical side of getting a project made.

Sessions are typically 60 minutes and can be shaped around you and your project. If you have a script, budget, schedule or production plan you’d like to discuss, you’re welcome to bring it along and we can work through specific questions together.

These sessions are particularly suited to film students, first-time producers, emerging filmmakers and writer-directors who want practical support with the production side of their work. No previous production experience is necessary.

Details

£50 per 60-minute session. Sessions are tailored to you and can cover anything from budgeting and scheduling to crewing, locations, production planning or specific questions about a project you're working on.

You're very welcome to bring along a script, budget, schedule or other materials to discuss during the session. More in-depth project reviews and production consultations can also be arranged separately.
