About Colton
I started my musical journey 5 years ago, and in that time I've shattered so many self-limiting beliefs about what can be accomplished with a simple, daily practice routine.
I used to think maybe my fingers were not genetically "capable" enough to learn guitar.
That turned out to be wrong. It just happens to be the case that for some of us, it takes a really long time to restore finger flexibility, strength, and dexterity (you really have to feel the burn every day!).
I used to think that to understand music theory I needed a four-year degree and years of experience making music.
It turns out I only needed about as much theory as I was able to learn in a single day, the majority of the struggle is maintaining a disciplined practice routine (starting with at least 15-30 mins per day, working up to an hour or two once your fingers are capable, and then as long as you can play after that!).
I also used to think that the goal of music was to share it with others... but it turns out that I can enjoy playing guitar alone and for myself for hours at a time. Proof that learning music is its own reward. Perhaps "happiness is only real when shared," to quote the film Into the Wild. But like the popular video game The Sims, one's "fun meter" certainly replenishes quite easily once a certain level of proficiency is reached on any instrument!
Let me help you convince yourself that learning music is worth it!

Are you afraid that music is too hard, that you missed your "chance" by not starting early in life, or that genetics or some other hard-set limitation means you can't make music?
I want to help you overcome such beliefs. Musicality is a part of human nature going back thousands of years, and a lot of how it's come to be taught in modern society has made it seem too "intellectually" difficult and too divorced from actual feeling.
My approach is to start from basic first principles regarding how to learn any musical instrument (I focus on guitar but my tips can help you unlock any musical instrument) as well as how to listen for song ideas as they emerge out of your practice rather than feeling overwhelmed thinking about the music rather than feeling it out through daily practice.
As far as music production goes, I focus on the absolute basics of getting to a workable mix (volume, panning, width, EQ, and compression being the most fundamental concepts).
I don't believe in a rote memorization approach to learning music. For instruments, there are exercises that should be practiced daily to unlock flexibility and dexterity, but as far as the actual concepts go (music theory, etc.) you really don't need too much to understand how to start working toward your first song.
What I want to help you do is figure out a practice plan that will ensure that you can guide yourself toward musical success. Ideally, you would only need one or two lessons from me in order to feel confident learning music on your own.
Most of the hard work is in the exercises, after all.
I believe the goal of every teacher should be to empower the student with sufficient knowledge to make the teacher no longer necessary. More than any specific knowledge, I want to give you such a thorough explanation of the basics that you're no longer afraid of learning music on your own, and that you no longer believe your brain or genetics limits what you can achieve through musical self-expression.
In a world that has become far too "brainy," I want to help restore trust in your own intuition, and in your human ability to reveal the music that lives inside you!
