About Maiko

I moved to Australia in 2008 and have been teaching Japanese since then. I have taught over 1200 students as a part-time lecturer at several tertiary institutions and over 100 students as a private tutor from young children to adult learners. I like playing piano and now I'm practicing the songs of Ghibli movies and Your Name. I also love watching anime and reading manga with my son! I am highly qualified and have 7 years + of teaching experience at two universities as a part-time teacher. Focus on speaking and communication skills I normally choose a textbook which focuses on communication rather than grammar unless you would like to aim for the JLPT exam. It is important to learn grammar but if you learn it first, it would be difficult to speak later. Language acquisition will occur smoothly if you follow this order; listening-> speaking -> reading -> writing Yes, it is the same order as you learned your mother tongue! In this order, you will be able to communicate faster! 3. Coaching skills I have also learned "coaching skills" that are important skills to support a learner or client in achieving a specific personal or professional goal. She is a very knowledgable and structured teacher. Every lesson is planned ahead of time so we can jump right into it and progress exactly like what was outlined in our goals. She is also very friendly and supportive.
Since she is teaching me Japanese we usually get sidetracked with discussions of Japan & Japanese customs (which is great!) but she always makes sure to redirect us back to the lesson yet makes sure it is fun and interesting.
I am currently very busy with work yet she has been extremely flexible and keeping me accountable regardless, which I am so grateful for!
Couldn't ask for a better teacher.
