About Gor

Want to become a stronger chess player with a clear and personalised training plan?

I’m Gor, a professional chess coach with 17+ years of playing and coaching experience. I teach kids, teenagers and adults — from complete beginners to serious players preparing for tournaments.

My coaching is built around one simple idea: understanding is more powerful than memorisation.

Instead of simply telling you which moves to play, I help you understand positions, recognise patterns, calculate variations, create practical plans and make better decisions on your own.

Every lesson is adapted to the student's level, goals and learning style. We can work on tactics, strategy, openings, endgames, game analysis, tournament preparation or any specific area where you feel you need improvement.

Students describe my teaching as patient, clear, structured and encouraging. I focus on creating an environment where you can ask questions, make mistakes, understand them and keep improving.

My students have achieved strong results in tournaments, including prize-winning performances at the American Open, appearances in the finals of the Armenian Chess Championship and strong performances in international competitions.

I teach in English, Russian, Armenian and Spanish and offer online lessons to students in Canada and worldwide.

About the lesson

Every lesson is built around your level, your goals and your own games.

You won’t just sit and memorise moves. We’ll work together to understand positions, identify mistakes, recognise patterns and build the thinking process you can use in your own games.

What we can work on:

♟️ Tactics & calculation — recognise patterns, calculate variations and find stronger moves.

♟️ Strategy & positional understanding — learn how to evaluate positions and create practical plans.

♟️ Opening preparation — understand opening principles and build a repertoire that suits your playing style.

♟️ Middlegame — learn what to do when there is no obvious move and how to turn ideas into a practical plan.

♟️ Endgames — build the fundamental knowledge and practical skills needed to convert advantages.

♟️ Game analysis — analyse your own games, understand where things went wrong and identify what to work on next.

♟️ Tournament preparation — prepare your games, openings, mindset and practical decision-making before important competitions.

What makes my lessons different?

I don’t believe in giving every student the same lesson.

I ask questions, listen to your ideas and adapt the training to the way you think and play. My goal is for you to leave the lesson not only knowing a better move, but understanding why it is better.

The first lesson is also a chance for us to identify your strengths, weaknesses and goals and decide what training approach will help you most.

Beginners, children, adults and experienced tournament players are all welcome.

Perfect! I’m very glad I found Gor. He is one of those teachers who makes you look at something you thought you understood and suddenly see it in a completely different way.
What impressed me most is the way he teaches. He doesn’t just tell you what move is correct and move on. Gor explains the idea behind it, asks questions, makes you think, and helps you understand why a position works the way it does. Because of this, the lessons feel much more meaningful than simply learning opening moves or memorising tactics.
Gor is also extremely patient and easy to communicate with. I never feel uncomfortable asking questions or admitting that I don’t understand something. He takes the time to explain things from different angles until they make sense.
He has a lot of experience, but at the same time he still has the curiosity of someone who loves learning and improving himself. That combination makes his lessons particularly enjoyable.
I also really appreciate how personal the lessons feel. He pays attention to my mistakes, my playing style and the areas where I need to improve, rather than simply following a fixed programme.
After working with Gor, I feel that I’m not just learning more chess moves — I’m starting to understand the game better. I think that is the biggest difference between having a chess lesson and actually having a good chess coach.
