About Sin Iong
I am a classically trained pianist, recently graduated with a Master of Music in Piano Performance from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance. I previously earned a Bachelor of Music in Classical Piano Performance from King’s College London, where I received piano instruction from faculty members of the Royal Academy of Music. I also hold an LRSM in Piano Performance and ABRSM Grade 8 in Music Theory. Throughout my musical journey, I have actively engaged in a wide range of performances, piano workshops, masterclasses, and accompaniment projects. These experiences have deepened my understanding of piano technique, stylistic interpretation, and musical expression. My performance highlights include the premiere of a colleague’s composition at King’s College London, a performance of Shostakovich’s Piano Concerto No. 2 with the MMS Orchestra, and solo recitals at venues such as Burgh House, Old Royal Naval Chapel, St Alfege Church, and St James Sussex Gardens. In addition to piano performance, I am also experienced in teaching music theory and advanced aural skills. I tailor my lessons to each student’s individual needs—whether they are preparing for exams or developing broader musical understanding. A core value in my teaching is having a good foundation or technique. A good foundation does not only expedite one’s learning of virtuosic pieces but is also key to avoiding permanent hand injuries. I emphasise this in my teaching because hand injuries are detrimental to one’s career, and it is actually a very common phenomenon, even among professionals. In our lessons, I will focus on techniques, including correct finger and arm gestures, way of using strength, and relaxation, etc. while using different explanations and demonstrations to ensure students are on the right track. I will be teaching musicality in terms of each student’s level of musical understanding. For beginner students (grades 1-4), we will focus on performance markings and how to emulate them in performances. For intermediate and advanced students, we will explore timbre, expression, and structure in depth. For all students, we will look at the musical backgrounds of pieces and composers’ styles, to give students a deeper understanding and help them relate to pieces they’re working on in a more personal manner. With lots of experience teaching children, I am patient to explain things recurrently to make sure students are on the right track before moving on. I would love to tutor students who want to prepare for piano exams (ABRSM, TRINITY, LCM), music theory exams (grades 1-8), aural training (grades 1-8 and advanced), or for those who just want to pick up the piano just for fun!
