About Yiran

Violinist Yiran Yao is a distinguished soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral performer. She is a member of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra since 2025. She holds a master’s degree in violin performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, where she studied under Kay Stern, concertmaster of the San Francisco Opera, and Chen Zhao of the San Francisco Symphony. Yiran has demonstrated her expertise and passion for both chamber and orchestral music, serving as concertmaster for the San Francisco Conservatory of Music Orchestra, Bard College Conservatory Orchestra, and the American Round Top Festival Institute Orchestra. With a multifaceted approach to her craft, Yiran captivates audiences with her exceptional talent and dedication. In addition to her performance career, she has over seven years of teaching experience, instructing students ranging in age from 5 to 40+. Yiran is currently furthering her studies at the USC Thornton School of Music under the guidance of Glenn Dicterow, former concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic.

About the lesson

I’m a very outgoing and smiley person and I like my lessons to be fun and enjoyable. However, I’m quite strict when it comes to teaching. I not only teach my students how to play a note, but also why they need to do it in order to play in tune, make a good sound, etc., to inspire them to think independently while practicing.

I have experience teaching students aging from 4 to 40+ for over 9 years. I’m enthusiastic in teaching and I believe students from different ages can benefit from my music knowledge passed on by the world class artists including the former concertmaster of NY Phil, Glenn Dicterow and the concertmaster of San Francisco Opera, Kay Stern.
