About Adam
I'm a Computer Science graduate of the University of Oxford, and I have been tutoring for over 9 years. I have trained 120+ American students for USACO (10+ promoted to Silver, 60+ to Gold, 20+ to Platinum). I also teach AP Computer Science A (almost 400 American students, over 91% scoring a 5) and coach the Canadian Computing Competition (70+ Canadian students, 6 of whom won full scholarships to the University of Waterloo). 54 of my American students have been admitted to Ivy League universities.

USACO rewards students who have solved many problems, not students who have read about many algorithms. So the lessons keep theory to a minimum and spend the time on past contests and carefully selected problems. We start with a diagnostic to find the right division. After that, every lesson follows the same loop: the student attempts a problem, we find exactly where the approach breaks, I teach the technique the problem requires, and I assign similar problems for practice. Bronze: simulation, complete search, sorting, and writing code that passes every test case, not just the samples. Silver: prefix sums, binary search, two pointers, greedy algorithms, DFS/BFS, and flood fill. Gold: dynamic programming, shortest paths, disjoint set union, and minimum spanning trees. Lessons are in C++, Java, or Python. I recommend C++ from Silver onward, where run time starts to matter. Before each contest we run timed mock contests, then review every missed test case. At one lesson a week, the course takes about a year. At two a week, about six months. Message me with your current division and your target, and I'll tell you where to start.
