About Carolyn
I am a Professor Emerita with over 30 years of experience as a researcher, practitioner and educator working in climate change, sustainability and the built environment. I have taught and supervised students at leading universities in the UK and internationally, including Queen’s University Belfast, the University of Bath, RMIT University in Melbourne, Cardiff Metropolitan University and the University of Wales Trinity Saint David.
Throughout my academic career I have supervised more than 75 MSc, MA, MPhil and PhD students and designed and delivered modules in sustainable and regenerative design, climate change adaptation, environmental design strategies and research methods. I have also developed postgraduate programmes including an MSc in Sustainable Design and an MA in Interior Design. My work is widely recognised within the field of Education for Sustainable Development, and I contributed to the national guidance on this subject as a member of the Advisory Group that rewrote the QAA/Advance HE Education for Sustainable Development Guidance.
Alongside teaching, I am an active researcher with over 100 peer-reviewed publications and more than 1,700 citations. My research has informed policy and practice in climate change adaptation and sustainability within the built environment, including work referenced in national climate adaptation and housing policy reports. I have also secured over £1.75 million in personal research funding and worked closely with government bodies, professional organisations and international research partners.
Students can expect a professional, supportive and intellectually rigorous learning environment. I work collaboratively with learners to help them develop confidence, strengthen their research and analytical skills, and produce high-quality academic work. My aim is to help students navigate complex sustainability challenges and translate their ideas into clear, well-structured and impactful research.

My tutoring and mentoring approach is student-centred, research-informed and tailored to the specific needs, goals and academic level of each learner. With 22 years of university teaching and postgraduate supervision experience, I support students in developing both subject knowledge and the critical thinking skills required to address complex sustainability and climate challenges.
My teaching methodology emphasises systems thinking, critical inquiry and applied problem-solving. I work collaboratively with students to explore complex topics in sustainability, climate change and the built environment, encouraging interdisciplinary thinking and the use of evidence-based research. I often guide students through structured discussions, conceptual frameworks and practical examples to help them develop clear arguments, strong analytical skills and well-structured academic work.
Lessons are typically 60 minutes, although longer sessions (90 minutes or two hours) can be arranged for dissertation or thesis support. Sessions may include reviewing research ideas, discussing theoretical frameworks, providing feedback on written work, developing research methodologies, or working through complex concepts in sustainability and environmental design.
I bring more than 30 years of research and professional experience, 22 years teaching in higher education, including supervising more than 75 MSc and PhD students across architecture, design, construction and sustainability disciplines. I have taught at several universities internationally and contributed to national guidance on Education for Sustainable Development.
My lessons are particularly suited to undergraduate, MSc, MA, MPhil and PhD students, as well as early-career professionals working in architecture, design, construction, sustainability or environmental policy who wish to deepen their knowledge or receive guidance on research, dissertations, publications or specialist sustainability topics.
