About Thimali Waduge (TSHA Waduge)
My passion for chess started when I was very young. I received my first chessboard as a gift from my uncle when I was three years old, and that sparked my curiosity and love for this amazing game. The chessboards and chess books I received during my childhood became the foundation of my journey as a chess player.
I have been playing competitive chess since I was 8 years old and have represented my school as both an individual player and a team member across different age groups. Throughout my chess journey, I have achieved championship wins, 1st runner-up, and 2nd runner-up positions in various competitions.
I have participated in National Team selections, many FIDE-rated events, local tournaments, and international competitions. I also had the honor of representing Sri Lanka at the Western Asian Games in 2018. During my university years at the Informatics Institute of Technology (IIT), I represented my university and won several championships.
Chess has always been more than a game for me; it has helped me develop patience, strategic thinking, and problem-solving skills. I am excited to share my passion and experience with new learners in Nelson, New Zealand.

I enjoy coaching beginners and intermediate players, especially kids who are starting their chess journey. My goal is to make chess fun, simple, and enjoyable while helping students build confidence and improve their skills.
My lessons focus on understanding the basics of chess, developing good thinking habits, learning strategies and tactics, analysing games, and improving decision-making skills. I adjust my teaching style based on each student's age, experience, and learning goals.
A typical lesson is around 1 hour and includes learning new concepts, practising positions, playing games, and discussing ideas in a friendly and supportive environment.
Chess is a powerful mind game, but learning it should not feel overwhelming. I believe every student can enjoy chess and improve step by step with the right guidance.
