About Paola

I'm Paola, and I'm a first year English BA Undergraduate at the University of Cambridge. I have experience working with children, having babysat abroad and offered tutoring in various local contexts. I am currently studying for my Renaissance paper, and studied English Literature, Politics, and Maths at A Level. I also completed EPQ, and studied French AS.

About the lesson

I have experience working with younger students in various tutoring contexts. I have taught English Literature and Language GCSE to year 11 students at my school. This involved clarifying understanding of our set texts, planning essay questions together, and tracing key themes. I have also worked with children on KS2 English, practising simple reading comprehension and reasoning skills. I offered lots of encouragement and positive reinforcement during this, helping the children develop confidence to read aloud. Similarly, I have volunteered by offering guitar and piano tuition as part of an outreach programme at my secondary school. The children I worked with went from having never played an instrument to confidently performing in front of their peers and teacher. These experiences mean I understand how to meet the needs of individual students; with the students I have worked with all having differing educational needs and interests.

My lessons will be orientated around where students feel their strengths and weaknesses lie. I will ensure students have a strong understanding of the set texts, and we will frequently target key exam skills, and plan essay questions together. A typical hour may involve first closely reading passages of the set texts, followed by planning a question together which applies this knowledge. Having recently sat these exams myself, I have a strong understanding of the specification. For GCSE English Language, the lessons will be more skills-based, to cover the unseen nature of the paper. Ideally, I'd be told what set texts the students are covering in advance, so I can familiarise myself with them if they differ from the ones which I have studied.
