About Claire

I want to tutor because, specifically in state schools, classes are often too large, and teachers are stretched too thin to offer the necessary support or individualised teaching that most students need. Last year I tutored my younger sister who struggled in classes due to anxiety and ADHD. I found that she rarely told me herself when she did not understand. I think that tutors should be able to identify where the students struggle and ask questions consistently to gauge a student's true knowledge on a subject. Students should not be afraid to ask for extra help, however, it is the tutor’s responsibility to create a space where the student is comfortable to do so. No student should be suffering through a subject because of anxiety about getting in trouble or being embarrassed in a class.

About the lesson

Creating a relaxed atmosphere is extremely important and I try to promote a solid, trusting relationship to encourage honesty and understanding. I do not have a rigid teaching style as I am aware of the different learning styles, and I am happy to make exercises that are student-specific. Lessons are typically an hour, however, I understand that lessons may need to be longer to complete tasks such as the SQA assignment. I have achieved an A grade in National 5, Higher, and Advanced Higher Business Management. I have tutored before and feel confident in my ability to help students with additional support needs, although this will also need to be discussed.
