About Harry
I am an alto saxophonist and jazz educator based in Denver, Colorado. I hold a B.A. in Global Jazz Studies from the UCLA Herb Alpert School of Music, where I graduated with a 3.83 GPA and performed across a range of ensembles including the Jazz Orchestra, Afro-Latin Jazz Orchestra, and Contemporary Jazz Ensemble. During my time at UCLA I had the opportunity to study privately with saxophonists Mark Turner, Azar Lawrence, Justo Almario, and Paul Carr — each of whom shaped my understanding of jazz at a deep level.
My interest in teaching developed alongside my playing. As a student and later a volunteer at the Paul Carr Jazz Academy & Summer Camp, I assisted instructors with rehearsals, demonstrations, and ensemble coaching, gaining firsthand experience in how to communicate musical ideas clearly and effectively to developing musicians.
I am passionate about jazz as a living tradition and bring that enthusiasm to every lesson. My goal is not just to help students improve technically, but to give them the conceptual tools and musical confidence to express themselves authentically through improvisation.

My lessons are centered on jazz improvisation, approached through a structured, concept-by-concept framework that gives students a strong foundation and the tools to become well-rounded improvisers. Rather than jumping straight into playing over changes, I break improvisation down into its fundamental building blocks. This helps the student build the kind of deep, transferable understanding that sticks with them for life.
A typical lesson works through the core concepts that underpin all jazz improvisation: internalizing melodic vocabulary and phrases, understanding harmony and chord-scale relationships, developing a strong rhythmic feel, and building the active listening skills that tie everything together. By learning each concept thoroughly before moving on, students develop real fluency and the confidence to express themselves freely when they play.
These lessons are open to all levels — beginner through advanced — and are available online via Zoom as well as in person for students in the Denver area.
