About Thor
I am a Philadelphia-based tutor of English literature and composition who has been privileged to pursue a career in Wall Street investment banking (after graduate work in Shakespeare Studies at University of Pennsylvania). I am open to working with a few select students who are intensely curious about life and its connection to language and literature and have a passion for rigorous intellectual exploration. However, to the beginner or intermediate level student who is willing to roll up her sleeves (and while having fun at the same time) I also extend a hand of welcome. Do you prefer F. Scott Fitzgerald to Jane Austen? Cool. Why? What does the writing of Toni Morrison have to offer us in the 21st century as we ponder our collective political future as Americans in a representative democracy? What do the superb writing of American literary aristocrats such as Henry Adams or Edith Wharton or Henry James offer us today who live in a more multi-cultural world of tolerance and inclusivity for all? These and many more questions rouse the spirit and incite the lion's roar! Join me!

METHOD: A lesson plan can be flexible of course depending upon a student's particular need. For advanced students who are pursuing high level undergraduate or graduate course work, I favor short writing exercises of 3-5 pages double spaced based upon a passage in a given text (e.g. The Great Gatsby or Emma). I encourage students to master the skill known as explication of a text, in which the meaning of the passage and its relation to the overall body of a work in which it is found is fully explored.
LESSON PLAN: Lesson plans can vary depending upon goals. I usually set 60 -90 day objectives and then repeat. Early on, a given student may need help with vocabulary, syntax, authorial intent (sometimes I will ask a student to develop 5 hypothetical exam questions in advance). Later, broader relational and philosophical concepts may be explored.
SETTING ME APART: Passion. I am myself an author and the writing of other authors from Homer to, say, St Augustine to Virginia Woolf and beyond is in my bones.
LESSONS FOR: High school to graduate level students mainly. But flexible.
