About Christopher

With over a decade of experience teaching and performing, I offer a professional, reliable, and supportive learning environment for every student. I hold a Bachelor of Music (Honors I) and a PhD in Music Composition, and currently teach both privately and in a high school setting, working with students across a wide range of levels and goals.

My approach is grounded in careful listening, clear communication, and structured progression. Each lesson is thoughtfully planned, with a focus on measurable improvement and long-term development. I keep detailed track of student progress and provide clear guidance on what to practice and how to practice it, so you always know you’re moving forward.

As an active performer, I stay closely connected to the practical demands of playing at a high level. In 2025, I placed 3rd in the Open Cornet Solo division at the Australian National Band Championships, performing against top players from across Australia and overseas. This ongoing performance experience informs my teaching and ensures that what I teach is practical, relevant, and effective.

I take a welcoming, encouraging and friendly approach to lessons, trying to keep the learning process fresh, engaging, and fun rather than scary or intimidating. I want students to feel comfortable, supported and encouraged, free to give things their best go without feeling like they need to be perfect. It's about growth and being that little better tomorrow and next week than you are today, and seeing how that growth compounds like crazy over time!

About the lesson

I’m a professional musician, composer, and trumpet player with a Bachelor of Music (Honors I) and a PhD in Music Composition. I’ve spent over a decade studying brass pedagogy and teaching, and I’m passionate about helping each student play more easily, progress more quickly, and avoid the common pitfalls that can hold players back.

My teaching is built around long-term, sustainable improvement rather than quick fixes. I focus on helping students make consistent, meaningful progress week by week—developing technique, sound, and confidence in a way that actually lasts. Whether you’re preparing for exams, working towards auditions, or simply want to enjoy playing more, I tailor lessons to your goals.

A typical lesson runs for 30–60 minutes, depending on your needs and level.

What sets my teaching apart is a highly individualized approach. I’ve spent years testing and analyzing a wide range of trumpet methods and pedagogical systems on myself, developing a deep understanding of how different approaches work—and more importantly, who they work for. Every player is physically and musically different, so rather than forcing a one-size-fits-all method, I help you work with your own natural setup. This leads to more efficient playing, faster progress, and fewer long-term issues.

I currently teach both privately and in a high school setting, working with students of varying ages and experience levels—from complete beginners through to advanced players.

As a performer, I play cornet and soprano cornet in brass bands, and trumpet in big band settings. In 2025, I placed 3rd in the Open Cornet Solo division at the Australian National Band Championships, and was the highest-placing Australian competitor in that section.

I’m also the founder of Phoenix Brass, where I design and produce mouthpieces and other equipment for brass players around the world.
