About Carolyn
I have taught piano for twenty years using traditional methods that remain unchanged because they were never broken to begin with, working across that time with approximately eight hundred fifty students. My own training was rigorous, and my teaching reflects that same rigor directly and deliberately, with no interest whatsoever in softening proper technique into something more casual or entertaining. I am not the right teacher for students seeking a relaxed hobby experience, and I state that plainly upfront so expectations are correctly set from our very first meeting together. I am, however, exactly the right teacher for serious students genuinely willing to commit consistent, disciplined effort toward real technical mastery over time. My former students have achieved strong exam results, competitive placements, and in several cases genuine professional careers, built through discipline rather than any shortcut whatsoever. I maintain high standards because I respect my students enough to believe they are capable of meeting them, not out of unnecessary harshness for its own sake. Parents and adult students consistently tell me my structured, demanding approach produced results no gentler alternative ever managed to achieve previously for them. After twenty years of teaching this way, I remain entirely unapologetic about expecting genuine, serious effort from every single student.

I do not believe in shortcuts or in making lessons entertaining at the expense of genuine technical development, and I make that clear from a student's very first lesson with me. Hand position, posture, and touch are corrected precisely and repeatedly until they are genuinely correct, not merely close enough to pass casual observation. Scales and arpeggios are practised daily without exception, and I expect a student to arrive having actually completed assigned practice, not merely intended to. Sight reading is drilled consistently and seriously, because I have seen too many students plateau permanently from years of neglecting this single, crucial skill. I choose repertoire deliberately to build specific technical skills in careful sequence, and a student does not skip ahead simply because a piece appeals to them personally. Feedback is precise and unsoftened, because false comfort has never once, in twenty years, produced a genuinely accomplished pianist under my instruction. I hold every student to the same rigorous standard of preparation regardless of age, background, or how casually they may have approached lessons elsewhere previously. Progress is measured in demonstrable technical competence, not in how pleasant or easy a given lesson happened to feel. Students who commit fully see real, lasting results; students seeking an easy hour should look elsewhere entirely.
