About Xavery

¡Hola! Si hablas español y quieres aprender suajili, ¡soy tu profesor ideal!

My name is Xavery Mpombo from Tanzania. I’ve been helping learners from around the world speak Swahili since 2019, and over the years, I’ve developed effective, enjoyable methods and resources that truly help students make progress.

I’m certified by the National Swahili Council of Tanzania (BAKITA) and hold a bachelor’s degree from Sokoine University of Agriculture.

I speak Swahili, English, and Ngoni, and I’m also learning Spanish, so I understand what it feels like to learn a new language from scratch — the excitement, the challenges, and the joy of small wins. My lessons reflect that understanding.

My students describe me as open-minded, enthusiastic, and kind, and I strive to make every class a safe and positive space to speak, make mistakes, and grow with confidence. Having learned foreign languages myself, I create lessons that are practical, structured, and encouraging.

I help learners improve conversational Swahili, including listening and speaking skills, with lessons tailored specifically for you. I respect all beliefs, work with all age groups, and am flexible to accommodate different levels, time zones, and busy schedules.

Whether you’re starting from zero or working to sound more natural, I’ll help you actually speak Swahili — one enjoyable step at a time.

As an experienced language teacher and learner, I believe that becoming fluent in a language involves several steps and some hard work — but if you put in the effort, you will see progress. I adjust my teaching to fit your unique learning style and keep a log of your progress so you can see how far you’ve come. This log also helps us review past materials and plan what to learn next, keeping everything organized and efficient.

My classes are friendly and relaxed, so you feel like you’re talking to a friend while learning. I’m committed to my bold mission of building the largest digital library for foreign Swahili learners in the world, so my lessons are always evolving with new resources.

  • 1) Do you speak this language fluently because of your origins or because a teacher inspired you to learn?

I speak Swahili fluently because it’s my mother tongue and the language that shaped who I am. Growing up in Tanzania, Swahili has always been part of my everyday life — at home, in school, and in my community. Over the years, I’ve come to understand it not just as a language, but as a rich system full of culture, history, and beauty. That deep connection is what inspired me to start teaching it to people around the world.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

I’d choose Julius Kambarage Nyerere, Tanzania’s founding father. He played a huge role in shaping Swahili into what it is today — not just as a national language, but as a symbol of unity and identity. Through his leadership, he encouraged books to be written in Swahili and made sure Radio Tanzania used it in its programs, helping it reach people from all walks of life. His vision helped make Swahili a language that truly connects us.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or behavior in the language that you particularly like?

One of my favorite Swahili sayings is “Pole pole ndio mwendo,” which means “Slowly is the way to go.” It carries a lot of wisdom. It teaches patience, calmness, and consistency — values that I also bring into my teaching. I always remind my students that learning a language takes time, and steady progress is better than rushing. It’s a journey to enjoy, not a race to win.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

Swahili means a lot to me because it connects me to my roots, my people, and my culture. It’s a language that brings people together and makes communication warm and natural. On a larger scale, I see Swahili as one of Africa’s proudest symbols — a language that opens a window into how Africans think, live, and express themselves. Teaching it gives me the chance to share that experience with people from different parts of the world.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The main challenge for most learners is mastering noun classes. They’re quite different from what English or European language speakers are used to. But once you understand how they work, everything starts to make sense. The best way to learn them is through consistent practice, examples, and real-life use. I like to make the learning process simple and logical, so students can build confidence step by step.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

Back in secondary school, I helped a classmate from our class who had trouble writing Swahili compositions. We started studying together after class, and with time, he improved so much that he became one of the best students in Swahili. Seeing his progress was a big moment for me — it showed me how powerful learning and guidance can be. Looking back, that’s probably when I first realized I was meant to teach.
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

Traveling around Tanzania has taught me a lot about Swahili. I’ve been to Zanzibar, Arusha, Lindi Municipal and Kilwa Masoko, Dodoma, Mbeya, Morogoro, and Iringa — and I was born in Ruvuma, the southernmost region of the country. Each place has its own touch — a different accent, rhythm, or way of expressing things. Seeing those differences firsthand helped me understand how dynamic Swahili really is, and it influences how I teach it to my students around the world.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof in language?

What makes me a Superprof is my love for the language, my professional teaching experience, and my dedication to helping people communicate with confidence. I’m a native speaker, a language teacher, and a translator who enjoys breaking things down in simple, clear ways. I personalize every lesson to fit my student’s level and goals. Beyond teaching, I’m building one of the largest digital libraries for foreign Swahili learners — a space where anyone can find the resources they need to learn, practice, and become fluent in Swahili. My goal is to make Swahili learning not just effective, but inspiring.
