About Willy
I have been teaching physics (inc. astronomy) and mathematics (A Level & Advanced Placement (A Level Equivalent)) at the secondary and college level for the past twenty plus years, both in the USA and also in the UK, China, Kuwait and Kazakhstan.. Thus, I am familiar with both the USA AP and UK A Level systems. My knowledge base qualifications include a Bachelors of Science Degree in Physics (with a double major in Mathematics) from the University of Illinois and a Master's of Science in the Geophysical Sciences from the University of Chicago. I also have over 50 doctoral credit hours towards my Ed. D. from the University of Texas and Texas Tech University. In addition to my teaching, I also consult as an Earth Scientist in industry and government. Thus, in addition to the twenty plus years of experience I have in teaching these subjects to students from all backgrounds and ability levels, my key skills include in depth knowledge of mathematics and the physical sciences as practiced in industry and government outside of academia..

I have a rather broad range of areas in my professional experience. This runs from research in solid earth geophysics in seismology and engineering geophysics to seismic exploration for hydrocarbons. My teaching experience as stated above has been in a range of physics areas. These include astrophysics and geophysics. My professional development has included attendance at the Teller Institute at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory in California on high energy physics and at the National Optical Astronomy Observatory at Kitt Peak in Arizona for the gathering of astrophysical data to bring back to the classroom for students to work on (taking spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei, in this case) (Teacher Leaders in Research Based Science Education Program).
While teaching in Uralsk, Kazakhstan we were very close to a large meteorite the hit West Siberia near Chelyabinsk. Several of the students in my Astronomy Club at NIS became interested in the cause of earth orbit crossing asteroids and how it was that they left the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. We did a bit of research on this and it turns out that the answer lay in the work of a Russian engineer working for the Russian railways in the later part of the 19th century. The students put together a research paper on their findings and presented it to the annual astronomy competition directed by the Russian Academy at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. Their paper took second prize in the competition which was considered quite remarkable for only junior students.
