About Tripti

I first found a passion for English literature and language at GCSE in which I received a grade 8. I then progressed to taking it at A-level and found it even more engaging. I now currently study law at the University of Birmingham. I came to like English literature due to my love for reading and have great subject knowledge and tips on how to achieve nuanced analysis and moving beyond simple and generic concepts. I am able to interpret sophisticated vocabulary into analysing different texts or plays to achieve the higher bands and higher levels. I learnt how to achieve what we call a "flair" analysis during my A-levels and am now able to replicate that whilst exploring the writer's intentions behind their use of language or subject terminology. Also incorporating the various contexts referring to the time period within which the particular text may have been written, allows a deeper understanding of the writer's deliberate choices. After receiving an A* on my coursework piece during my A-levels, I learnt how to include numerous critical interpretations of the text and embed those into my essay argument, keeping my debate open and allowing different opinions to comment on the text. This ensured I was using critical thinking which unlocks a whole other level of analysis. Above that, picking the most significant moments of a play or novel is paramount in taking note of key scenes/acts and the impact they have by breaking down themes and characters using reading comprehension.

I enjoy tutoring English language and literature as well as Law. I usually structure my lessons with PowerPoint slides making sure there is a starter activity to give a chance to settle into the lesson first and get a feel for where the student's progress is at. Depending on the focus of our lesson I will, prior to the lesson, get the appropriate materials ready such as the types of forms of poetry, spelling or grammar. I use various resources online as well as looking at a potential question myself and talking the student through the most sensible approach in accordance with the assessment objectives for that question. I always note down the progress my student is making as well as what we have worked on during our lesson. I will include various activities such as quizzes and fill in the gap to test knowledge and understanding of the topic. Occasionally I consider model answers and structure to answers to show what a high-level analysis/exam answer would look like. I also advise on what revision techniques may work in the run up to exams, as personally I know how stressful exams can be and during my A-levels and GCSEs I found mind maps the most useful but also appreciate there are other methods such as a "question and answer" flashcard format for different learning styles. Texts for English literature include Macbeth, An Inspector Calls, Jekyll and Hyde as well as power and conflict poetry exam board AQA. OCR exam board for law. Typical one hour lessons.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I tutor English language & literature and Law. I initially developed an interest into English during my GCSE's. I felt so passionate about the subject that I went on to take it at A-level, English literature to be specific. English appealed to me the most, having the ability to analyse a given text to a perceptive level whilst learning about the time periods that set the foundation of most texts.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

For literature my expertise is An Inspector Calls, Macbeth and Jekyll & Hyde. Teaching the assessment objectives of these plays looking at: detailed analysis, context, character profiles, planning and writing essays. For both language and literature I cater to the AQA exam board and for Law OCR.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

My GCSE English teacher has so much resilience in me and taught me to keep going, that is what I want to replicate as a tutor.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

There are various qualities I believe make a good tutor. These include: patience, reliability, supportive, reassuring, adaptability, enthusiasm and expertise.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

I would always be the first one in intervention sessions, eager to better my performance in my exams.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

I used to struggle to get detailed analysis out of a quote, after studying and tutoring many students this has become the main skill I teach. Learning how to reach high level, flair analysis is the foundation for a good essay.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I have a passion for tutoring subjects because I find it rewarding to help students reach their full potential and make them realise what they want to achieve is possible.
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I am keen to excel every student I work with. I am punctual and there to reassure any concerns/questions a student might have. I will push students to their challenges in a supportive way, ensuring they understand the content before we move on and put that into practice.
