About Renata

My name is Renata Carlomagno, I am Brazilian and currently living in Scotland. I have been working professionally in theatre continuously since 2011. Since 2015, I have developed my path as an actress-researcher, specialising in physical theatre and its various approaches. I hold degrees in Letters and Dramatic Arts, and my work is inspired by artists and groups such as Lume Teatro, Jerzy Grotowski, Eugenio Barba, Odin Teatret, Tatsumi Hijikata, Tadashi Endo, and Kazuo Ohno.

In Brazil, I am part of a physical theatre research group guided by the British actress Naomi Silman, affiliated with Lume Teatro, a group with 41 years of experience in physical theatre research. The group I belong to has been conducting its own research for 10 years, which has enriched my understanding and practice of body-based theatre.

I have a solid background in teaching, working as an instructor since 2011. From 2018, I began developing online classes, allowing me to explore the unique potential of both in-person and remote teaching. In parallel, I am a student of Psychoanalysis and Psychodrama, disciplines that inform my perspective on the body, attentive listening, and creative processes, enriching both my artistic practice and pedagogical approach.

About the lesson

Butoh is a Japanese dance that emerged in post-war Japan in the late 1950s. It is a meditative and expressive practice that helps students explore themselves, develop presence, and connect with their body’s energy. In my classes, we focus on body awareness, energy, and the relationship with both the inner and outer world, including a connection to nature.

Butoh has a strong link to Zen Buddhism, particularly through the philosophy of Ma (the space or emptiness between things) and Presence. The concept of Ma is fundamental in both Buddhism and Butoh-Ma, where the dancer seeks to make the invisible visible through small, intense, and deliberate movements.

You don’t need to have an agile or flexible body—anybody can dance Butoh, and it is suitable for all ages.

I create a safe, supportive, and welcoming environment, where the student feels comfortable exploring and discovering their own expressive potential. My approach is sensitive, attentive, and caring, allowing each student to move at their own pace and connect deeply with the practice.
