About Renu
One of the greatest things I learned from this course was the definition and importance of having a purpose. "It is not existential nor theological but rather, practical" as the AGWR defines it (221). It never occurred to me how crucial it was to have understanding for the reason why I wrote what the things I did-- let alone argue for things I was initially inexpert about such as the hot and very controversial topic of gun violence for my Advocacy Essay! Prior to this class, I had always just written essays and papers on prompts that my professors had assigned which, to my disappointment, always presented dreary prompts on tedious topics. I truthfully feel that the last time I was able to write about something voluntarily or something I was truly passionate about was probably in middle school- almost 5 years now! Thus, through that long period, I had lost interest in writing progressively and found it to become a weak academic area of mine. Thus, through this class which Dana gave us the options to discuss whatever we'd prefer, that freedom of option to fundamentally show a purpose from that writing assignment was exceptionally empowering to me as a young writer. From essentially all the writing assignments that Dana had assigned to us this course, the main drive I had through completing them all was to serve my purpose in stating the things I did. I realized that none of Dana's prompts were exceptionally hard or challenging because as long as I focused on arguing for what I wanted [the purpose], I was so enthralled in that writing mindset that in the end, I constructed the best works I could with my utmost potential.

My first impression of this class is that I thought it was going to be really tough. I’ve heard countless times from people that have taken it before that it requires a lot of hours, a lot of work, and the research and the amount of words we have to write can be very difficult. I went in thinking it will be the most challenging class I will take because I was not very strong in writing. In the end, I very much enjoyed myself and can truly say that I am a better writer and that it has changed the way I think about problems in society because of the many layers I have learned this quarter.
