About Matthew
I'm a former Sixth Form Lecturer with over 10 years' experience working in education, including teaching WJEC Level 3 Applied Criminology, Public Services and other vocational qualifications.
During my time in education, I worked as both a subject lecturer and personal tutor, supporting students with their academic progress, assessments, target setting and individual development. I've taught students across a wide range of abilities and particularly enjoy helping someone go from feeling overwhelmed by a subject to genuinely understanding it.
Since leaving full-time education, I've moved into Project Management and am a qualified PRINCE2 Practitioner. I also serve as a Lance Corporal in the Army Reserve. Both roles have strengthened the same qualities I valued as a teacher: clear communication, organisation, patience, reliability and the ability to explain what needs to happen next.
Criminology was always one of my favourite subjects to teach because it creates opportunities for genuine discussion and debate. I don't believe effective learning comes from simply memorising pages of notes; students should be encouraged to question ideas, make connections and develop their own understanding.
I'm professional and organised, but also approachable and down-to-earth. Students should feel comfortable saying, "I don't understand this" without worrying about getting something wrong.
Whether you're trying to catch up, move from one grade to the next or aim for the highest marks available, I'll take the time to understand what you're working towards and help you develop a clear route to get there.

My approach to tutoring is simple: first identify where you are now, where you want to be, and what's currently getting in the way.
I previously taught WJEC Level 3 Applied Criminology as a Sixth Form Lecturer, so my lessons combine subject knowledge with practical experience of teaching, assessment and supporting students towards their target grades.
A typical 60-minute lesson will usually begin with a quick check of your current understanding before focusing on one or two specific areas for improvement. Rather than simply talking through slides or asking you to memorise large amounts of information, I use discussion, questioning, real-world examples and targeted activities to help you genuinely understand the material.
We can work across all four WJEC units:
• Unit 1 – Changing Awareness of Crime
• Unit 2 – Criminological Theories
• Unit 3 – Crime Scene to Courtroom
• Unit 4 – Crime and Punishment
Lessons can focus on understanding theories and concepts, applying case studies, assessment criteria, planning stronger responses, analysis and evaluation, revision techniques, exam preparation or controlled assessment preparation.
I'm particularly interested in helping students understand why they're losing marks. If you already know the content but aren't achieving the grade you expect, we'll look at your approach to questions and assessment criteria and identify practical changes you can make.
I have over 10 years' experience working in education across teaching, lecturing, tutoring and programme delivery, and I've worked with students with a wide range of abilities and confidence levels.
My lessons are primarily aimed at Sixth Form and College students studying WJEC Level 3 Applied Criminology. Whether you're struggling with the course, aiming to move up a grade or pushing for the highest marks, lessons will be adapted around what you actually need rather than following a generic programme.
Most importantly, I want lessons to feel relaxed and engaging. Criminology is a fascinating subject when you can discuss and challenge the ideas rather than simply memorising them for an assessment.
