About Holly
I'm a working street and gig musician myself, still performing most weekends locally while building teaching alongside it, and honestly the two feed each other more than I expected starting out. Four years into teaching now, I've worked with about sixty students, mostly teenagers and young adults who want something a bit more real and current than formal lessons often feel like. I didn't go to music school, I learned mostly by doing, plenty of mistakes made in public on street corners and at small gigs along the way, and I bring that same scrappy energy into teaching. I connect particularly well with students who feel intimidated by more traditional, formal teachers, since I'm genuinely still figuring plenty out myself and I think that honesty puts people at ease quickly. My teaching style is relaxed, current, and a bit unpolished compared to more established studios, but it's built on real, ongoing performing experience rather than theory alone. I care a lot about students actually playing somewhere eventually, even somewhere small and low-key, rather than just improving quietly and privately forever. Watching a student work up the nerve to play in public for the first time is honestly one of my favorite parts of this whole gig. I'm not the finished article myself, and that's exactly why this works.

I'm still actively building my own playing career, performing locally most weekends, so lessons with me come from someone genuinely living the same hustle a lot of my students are chasing themselves. We start with basic bow control and simple tunes, honestly nothing fancy at first, because I believe playable fundamentals matter more than polish when you're just getting started. I teach a lot of what I've picked up actually performing, handling nerves, recovering smoothly from a scratchy note, and just pushing through an imperfect moment while people are actually watching. Repertoire is student-led almost entirely, whatever tune someone's genuinely excited about learning, because forced repertoire kills motivation faster than anything else I've personally seen happen. I record lessons on my phone sometimes so students can hear themselves honestly, the same way I make myself listen back to my own rough street recordings, cringing included occasionally. I'm upfront when something sits outside my own direct experience, and I'd rather admit that clearly than pretend otherwise to sound more impressive than I am. Feedback stays direct but genuinely encouraging, since I remember exactly how discouraging harsh critique felt as a beginner myself starting out. We talk openly about real goals, whether that's simple enjoyment or eventually performing somewhere properly. This isn't polished textbook teaching, and I think that honesty helps.
