About Akalanka
I started swimming at six years old, when my father — a keen but non-professional swimmer himself — first put me in the water. By nine, I was winning national championships, and by thirteen, I was representing Sri Lanka internationally. Since then, swimming has taken me around the world: the Youth Olympics, Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and World Aquatics Championships, and I currently hold Sri Lankan national records in the 50m and 100m backstroke and 50m butterfly.
A few years ago, I moved to Melbourne to continue training at an elite level, balancing full-time study, work, and competitive swimming — often without family nearby to lean on. That experience taught me discipline, patience, and how much progress is possible with the right guidance and consistent practice.
I teach because I remember exactly what it felt like to be a nervous child in the water for the first time, and I know how far the right support and technique can take you — whether your goal is simply learning to swim safely, building fitness and confidence, or working toward competitive times. I love helping people discover the same confidence in the water that changed my own life, and I bring the same care and attention to every student I teach, regardless of age or ability.

My Teaching Approach
My coaching is built on the same fundamentals that took me from a six-year-old first getting in the pool to representing Sri Lanka at the Commonwealth Games — proper technique, water confidence, and consistent, patient repetition. I break every stroke down into small, manageable steps: body position, breathing, arm and leg technique, and timing, rather than throwing everything at a student at once. For nervous beginners, the first priority is always comfort in the water before we touch technique at all.
Each lesson is typically 45–60 minutes, which gives enough time to warm up, work on specific skills, and finish with something the student can feel confident about. I keep sessions focused rather than long, since swimming technique is best built through short, high-quality practice rather than fatigue-driven repetition.
Experience: I've spent over 15 years training at a national and international level, including at the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and World Aquatics Championships, and I've coached swimmers informally throughout my competitive career, drawing on training methods from some of the top coaches I've worked with in Sri Lanka and Australia.
Who my lessons are for: I teach all ages and levels — from young children learning to swim for the first time, to teens and adults wanting to improve confidence or fitness, through to competitive swimmers looking to refine technique and speed. Lessons are tailored individually, so no two students follow exactly the same plan.
