About Umay
Hi, I'm Umay, a former Second in Charge of English with six years' experience teaching GCSE English Language and Literature in London secondary schools.
I've supported hundreds of students through their exams, from those needing to close a specific grade gap to those aiming for the very top marks, and I know exactly what examiners are looking for because I've spent years marking to those exact standards.
I'm currently studying for an MSc in Child Development at UCL, which keeps me closely engaged with how students learn and develop; something I bring into every lesson. My tutoring style is calm and encouraging; I also like to tailor my sessions to your interests in order to make our time together as engaging as possible.

I have a student-centred approach and combine quality first teaching with tried and tested examination and essay writing techniques. I focus on breaking down what examiners actually reward, working through past papers and mark schemes, and helping students develop their own voice rather than relying on generic templates. Every session is tailored to the individual student's target grade and the specific gaps in their writing or analysis.
Lessons typically run for an hour, either in person or online, and I keep scheduling flexible around school commitments and exam timetables.
I have six years' experience teaching GCSE English Language and Literature, most recently as Second in Charge of the English department at a London secondary school. I specialise in AQA but am equally confident working across Edexcel, OCR, and Eduqas, as well as IB English.
My lessons are aimed at secondary school students studying GCSE or IB English, from those looking to consolidate a grade to those aiming for the top marks.
