My approach is unique because of the diversity of experience I bring to the table. An elementary teacher since 1969 and later a School Principal, my dedication and commitment to the cause of “literacy” led me to independently establish a Private Special Needs School in Barbados. THE ORTON-GILLINGHAM METHOD The program offered is based on the Orton-Gillingham method of reading instruction. This approach is named after a Neurologist, Dr. Samuel T. Orton and a Psychologist/Educator, Anna Gillingham. Dr. Orton was a pioneer in the field of reading failure and related language difficulties. He brought together neuroscientific information developing the most accepted and successful theory and practice for reading remediation. He founded the International Dyslexia Association. This approach combines multisensory techniques: Teaching the structure of written English, sounds (phonemes), prefixes, suffixes, roots and common spelling rules, using visual, auditory and kinesthetic approaches. The program provides students with immediate feedback and a predictable sequence. This method can be utilized on any age student that is experiencing reading difficulties.
