About Tracy

Why do I want to teach Mandarin? Well… first of all, I need the money.

But jokes aside, I genuinely love teaching. There is something very satisfying about sharing something I know well with someone who genuinely wants to learn it, especially when I see that moment of “Ohhh! Now I get it!”

I was born and raised in Beijing, China, and have lived in New Zealand since high school. I speak native Mandarin and fluent English, so I can help bridge the gap between the two languages and explain not only what Chinese people say, but why we say it that way.

I've been teaching adults professionally for around four years, and teaching is something I genuinely enjoy. I'm friendly, patient, easy-going and I love communicating with my students. I don't mind explaining something five different ways until we find the one that makes sense to you.

And don't worry about making mistakes around me. Say it wrong, forget the word, mix up your tones, we'll probably laugh about it, fix it, and you'll remember it better next time.

About the lesson

My teaching philosophy is simple: listen more, speak more, and enjoy the process, you’ll get there!

My lessons focus on real, natural Mandarin, the way native Chinese speakers actually communicate in everyday life. Alongside standard Mandarin, you’ll learn commonly used expressions, casual phrases, slang, conversational vocabulary and natural ways of responding that you may not find in a textbook.

I believe languages are best learned through practice, not pressure. Learning should be relaxed, practical and fun. You’ll be encouraged to listen, speak, make mistakes, ask questions and try again. The more you actually use Mandarin, the more naturally it will start to stick.

A typical lesson is one hour and can include free conversation, listening practice, pronunciation, vocabulary, everyday expressions and slang. As a fluent English speaker, I can also explain the meaning and cultural context behind Chinese expressions in English, including when something sounds natural, too formal, outdated, funny, or something a native speaker would actually say.

I have been teaching IT to adults for four years and genuinely love teaching. Before my current role, I also taught Chinese to children for around six months. I enjoy making complicated things simple, memorable and easy to understand.

All ages and all levels are welcome. Whether you're starting from zero or already know Mandarin but want to sound more natural, we'll tailor the conversations to you.
