About AJ

Bonjour! I’m AJ. I am a native French speaker with a passion for sharing my language and culture.
What makes me different from other tutors? By day, I am a Community Service/ Mental health worker
This means my professional background isn't just in 'teaching'. It is in patience, empathy, and empowering others. I know that learning something new can make you feel vulnerable. My background has trained me to create a supportive environment where you never have to fear making a mistake. I’m here to lift you up, not correct you harshly.

But trust me, sometimes I will playfully tease you and force your brain to work a little harder! It is all part of my psychological strategy to help it stick. We will laugh about it together, and you'll be amazed at what you can do.

French without the Fear!

Do you know some vocabulary but struggle to form a phrase? Do you find yourself stuck translating everything in your mind? I feel you, and I’ve got your back.

My lessons are designed to be a 'Safe Space' first, and a classroom second.

Textbooks often teach strict, formal rules, but real people speak 'street' French. As a native speaker, and I can bridge that gap for you.

Who I teach:
Adults: We focus on conversation, confidence, and "un-learning" the fear of speaking.
Kids: I use my support work background to make learning fun and engaging for children. Parents love my patience! (WWC checked)

What to expect:
Zero Pressure: We go at your pace.
Real-World & Authentic: I teach the cultural nuance and flow that makes you sound authentic, not robotic.
Flexible: Some of my students like role plays and some like interactive games. Whatever makes you happy at the same time learning.
My Promise: You will leave every lesson feeling more confident than when you started.
You will be also be added to my Duolingo classroom whereby I will monitor your progress.

  • 1) Did you grow up speaking this language? Or were you inspired by a trip abroad?

I was born into the melody of the French language. French wasn’t just a school subject, it was the rhythm of our daily life, our media, and our streets. However, my relationship with the language evolved from functional to passionate during a trip to Paris. Seeing the language I grew up with alive in its capital, from the fast paced slang of the cafés to the elegance of the architecture, made me fall in love with it all over again. I realized then that I didn't just want to speak it, I wanted to share it.
  • 2) Can you name a living, historical or fictional character that you think is the emblematic representative of the language's culture?

For me, it has to be Celine Dion. Most people know her for her English hits, but she’s a proud Quebecoise who has stayed true to her roots. Her album D’eux is still the best-selling French album ever, which is incredible. She’s the perfect example of how the French language can cross borders and move people emotionally, no matter where they are from in the world.
  • 3) Is there a typical word, phrase, tradition or expression in the language that you particularly like?

I love the duality of the language. On one hand, I often use "J'adore" it’s the classic, romantic way to express deep appreciation. But on the flip side, I have a soft spot for "Je kiffe." It is a slang term (originally with Arabic roots) that you hear all over the streets of France today. It essentially means "I’m freaking loving this." I teach my students both, because to truly know French, you need to know how to speak to a CEO and how to joke with a friend.
  • 4) Why does speaking this language matter to you?

French is a language of "feeling." I find that when you switch from English to French, your personality shifts slightly, you become more expressive, more precise in your emotions, and perhaps a little more romantic! For me, speaking French matters because it allows me to access a deeper, more vibrant version of myself. Giving my students the key to unlock that "French version" of themselves is what drives me.
  • 5) What is the main difficulty in learning this language and what can help the process of learning?

The biggest hurdle I see is the "construction gap." Many students have an excellent vocabulary list memorized, but they freeze when trying to weave those words into a sentence. They get stuck trying to translate word for word from English. The solution is to stop treating the language like a math equation and start treating it like music. I focus on helping students find the flow and syntax of the sentence first, so they can speak with confidence rather than perfectionism.
  • 6) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your language learning or your days at school.

I once decided to learn Italian, convinced that my fluency in French would make it a breeze since they are "cousin" languages. I walked into a café in Rome with high confidence, only to realize I was just speaking French with a heavy Italian accent! It was a humbling moment that taught me a valuable lesson: Cultural humility. You cannot force one language's rules onto another. I use this story to remind my students that making mistakes is not just okay, it is the fastest way to learn. If you aren't laughing at yourself occasionally, you aren't learning!
  • 7) How has travel or a specific trip helped you to increase your skill and knowledge of the language?

My five years working on cruise ships were my true university. I traveled to over 25 countries, and in every port, I encountered different "flavors" of French from the Caribbean to Europe to Africa. This experience showed me that there isn't just 'one' correct way to speak French it’s a living language that changes flavor from the Caribbean to Africa to Europe. It trained me to be adaptable; I learned to tune my ear to different accents and dialects instantly. This is a skill I bring to my lessons. I prepare my students to speak French in the real world, not just the classroom.
