  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I developed an interest in tutoring English and Spanish several years ago when I went to Madrid. It was a great way to meet other people and learn more about the world. I've no regrets taking the leap to do so!
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach English and Spanish, but I don't just teach a language. I teach people how to express themselves and how to connect with each other. Learning a language is more than just about asking for the bill and where the train station is. It's about becoming a different person and opening yourself up to the world.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Absolutely. I've had several teachers throughout the years, particularly at university who inspired me the most. As for one particular teacher, I can't say. All of my teachers come together as a mosaic of influence that is forever added to and continues to influence me as time goes on.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

There are many qualities required to be a good tutor, including empathy, patience and enthusiasm, even when students are not feeling motivated. It takes time and relentless passion to be recognised as a good tutor.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was learning Spanish, I had an incredibly embarrassing situation in Colombia which culminated in me accidentally asking for something quite vulgar from a woman working at a burger chain. Fortunately, I was with a family and the daughter translated that I meant to ask for something else entirely, and the situation was diffused. Many would've given up after such an embarrassing ordeal, but I persevered.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or are still facing in your subject?

Difficulties I faced were mainly centred around motivation. Sometimes, I would find myself working quite hard with minimal gain. But I know that one day, it all just clicks. Our minds work in mysterious ways and we can't force the good things, so the way I overcame this difficulty was to keep persisting, knowing that one day it will pay off or provide me with a valuable lesson.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

The particular passion I have is enabling people to go from learning a language, to becoming an even stronger version of themselves. Learning a language is hard to say the least, but once you do so, you realise you're a highly capable individual. It's when my students realise this that I know I've achieved my goal, the language is just a route of getting there.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions)?

The thing that makes me a Superprof is that I strive to bring the best out of my students, it's not enough for me to help them tick the box. I'm always trying to help them achieve their best.
