About Daniel

I'm Daniel, I've played bass guitar for 9 years, piano for 4 years and have been singing all my life.

I love music and I love writing songs.

My music tastes are diverse, I've played metal shows, I study jazz majoring in piano, I've performed in musical theatre, I've sung in choral groups, I produce my own music and I'm always surrounding myself in music to accompany my day.

I love learning and I find teaching others helps me learn even more.

It doesn't take much to make a musical idea effective. I will show you through deceptively simple manipulation of rhythmic, harmonic and melodic ideas to give your song writing process more room to grow into.

Depending on your level of theoretical knowledge, we can begin at different points of the journey.

If you feel you just "know chords" on guitar or piano without really having a base on how they interact, that's okay.

For us songwriters primarily, first and foremost, we are guided by our ears and there are certain musical patterns that our ears are attuned to, this attunement can differ greatly between the different kinds of people of the many cultures of the world. What is dissonant to one's ear can sound consonant (the opposite of dissonant) to another's.

This is where song writing truly becomes an expression of self; what sounds right to you? What is your inner musical voice expressing?

To those who are reading this purely looking for a methodical approach to song writing: don't worry, there will be heavy theoretical concepts, but remember that first and foremost music and the art of song writing (especially in the contemporary/semi-contemporary field) is an expressive one.
Our aim is to create an emotional link between our listeners and our music.

When it comes to understanding "music theory" (more on that specific term later) we are often caught up with wanting to express these theoretical ideas that we/our ears have not digested yet, when instead we can use simpler ideas to take us to places that tiptoe familiarity with unfamiliarity.

This is no condemnation of virtuosic and melodically, rhythmically and harmonically complex music, if you feel the song calls for then it is 100% your choice as the songwriter to include these complex details. I will be drawing a lot of allegories between music and language (especially conversation), such as why we limit certain words we say so when we do say them (i.e. expletives) they tend to have a greater impact.

This is the beauty of it, your song writing process will grow and develop and shape as you learn more or hone your instrument or go through stages in life.

I hope I can join you for a part of your journey!
