About Balraj

As a holistic health practitioner and coach of 15 years teaching Bhangra has been a great tool in my arsenal for wellness in the last 8 years. I’ve taught hundreds of students with great success. I first became interested in teaching Bhangra after taking Kundalini Yoga and Tai Chi classes. As someone who has loved Bhangra their entire life and has been an avid dancer at celebrations and collector of music growing up it didn’t take me long to figure out that dancing Bhangra could be a form of Kundalini Yoga, being a great way to build and direct energy. From a Kung Fu perspective I felt Kundalini Yoga was incomplete and could potentially leave the practitioner imbalanced so I came up with my own curriculum and that incorporated all the elements of my personal discipline and started teaching. I then endured a tragedy of losing my 2nd born son who passed away. The following year it was difficult for me to return to my practice and I really wanted a change and an even more meaningful career (I had been mainly creating natural supplement brands). That’s when I met my teacher Dr. Jasprit Singh phd who taught me his own form of Yoga and Bhangra. He traveled to India and catalogued over 100 moves with a famous choreographer in New Delhi. He taught me the entire system and I used it as therapy for myself to deal with the loss of my son in a healthy way. I then taught workshops and weekly classes at a plethora of studios in Central California incorporating the logic I had already come up with on my own. Teaching you as a student or a potential teacher would be very meaningful for me and it’s something I love to share.

About the lesson

I teach the folk dance Bhangra with a catalogue of over a 100 traditional moves. I taught for years at various studio including the City College in Santa Barbara and Ojai, California. I teach Bhangra as a form of Dance Therapy - that means that it will help your coordination, cognition, emotional well-being and social abilities. Smiling is the number one rule, and after an hourof smiling and dancing with me you will have the ultimate natural high. If you have two left feet and consider yourself unable to dance then you really must join my class because I guarantee that you will be dancing and having fun after the first class and in just a few you will feel competent.
