About Penny
I love teaching - being able to help students find their singing voices and thrive is one of the biggest joys any singing teacher can have. I enjoy working with singers ranging from complete beginners to professionals as every voice is different, and it is always exciting to hear a voice develop. I also work with singers who may have had a vocal injury at some stage and are rehabbing their voices, and it is always wonderful to see their confidence grow as their voices heal.
I have also been a professional singer for 23 years, and I love being able to help students hone their performance skills and hear how they felt performing on stage.
My performance experience includes The Royal Variety Performance 2022, Edinburgh Fringe, Panto at the New Wimbledon Theatre, Abbey Road, The Royal Albert Hall, Download Festival, Guilfest, and Radio 5 Live, to name but a few.

I have been a singing teacher for the past 21 years, as well as a professional singer for 23 years. I specialise in teaching contemporary music and musical theatre, and have taught the RSL syllabus, along with LCME Musical Theatre for Singers or Actors, and the ABRSM diploma syllabus. I have a 100% pass rate for exam results, usually at distinction level, and pride myself on making sure that students are fully prepared and feel at ease with what the exams entail. I am also trained in vocal health first aid and fundamental anatomy.
I have taught children from the age of 7 and adults for a long time, and I enjoy both the focus of teaching students on a one-to-one basis, as well as encouraging students to take part in other music-based activities. I also have a lot of experience of teaching via Zoom. Lesson lengths are either 30 minutes or an hour long.
I go by the biopsychosocial model of teaching. This is taking into account the biological aspect of singing (how the student is using their body to sing); the psychological aspect of singing (how the student feels about their voice); and the social aspect of singing (how the student feels about others hearing their voice). I find that by using this model it helps the singer to understand all the different things that can affect their voice – from tiredness and illness to thought processes that can cause a stumbling block, to how singing in front of an audience can cause anxiety. Within this, it helps the student to be kind to themselves, and to never see any voice crack or slip in their learning as a negative. I am a firm believer that any challenges faced in learning how to sing should always be seen as a positive, as this way it reduces any kind of shame or stigma associated with a voice cracking, or not being able to hit the high note straight away.
I have no problem with tailoring lessons to suit the individual, and am always keen to share feedback notes after the sessions so that students know what they did well and what they need to work on for the next lesson.
In my opinion, singing is a vital skill to learn as it not only helps the students to connect with their thoughts and feelings, but it is also a proven reliever of both stress and anxiety. Students who have sung for 30 minutes or more tend to be more relaxed, more focused, and more able to retain information taught to them in other lessons. I cannot count how many students have found an improvement in their anxiety levels from singing, especially since Covid.
