About Adriana

Vocal coach, singer, songwriter and performer that speaks Brazilian Portuguese, English, Spanish and Italian. She currently teaches singing in many schools in London and helps emerging artists from UK and Brazil to develop their material before recording it in the studio. With 20 years of singing and 10 years as a vocal coach, Adriana Martuscelli graduated in Drama, Arts and Music Studies (DAMS) with the focus in Music and Live Performance at the University of Bologna, Italy. She also studied Classical Singing and Opera at the University of São Paulo, Brazil and Popular Music Performance – Singing at the University of West London, England. At University of São Paulo, she ran workshops of Body Awareness, Stage Presence and Voice Pedagogy. Still in Brazil, she did a course of diction for singers. Adriana did her professional internship in Artistic Direction at Fondazione Teatro Comunale in Bologna, Italy and worked backstage in Les Miserable Musical in London and at the Bologna Jazz Festival. She also has organised many open mics and some music encounters, being able to understand many sides of the music industry. Adriana’s main styles are Brazilian music and jazz, she sings at Beloved George, a Brazilian fusion band from London and in parallel, she is maturing her first album. For her the body-voice connection is the main key in singing and because of it, her work references include body awareness, Alexander Technique, singing therapy, Grotowski Vocal Technique, si canta como si parla (sing the way you speak) principles of the Italian School and Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Adriana participated in workshops from Jean Jacques Lemêtre and Workcenter of Jerzy Grotowski to explore more about the body and its expression.

About the lesson

The more I research, the more I see how the connection between body and voice is essential to sing. I use this connection as the main foundation of my singing session. I integrate music and movement to potentialise and develop your interpretation and technique. I teach all levels and I have an Enhanced DBS check. My core styles are Brazilian Music (including Bossa Nova and Samba) and Jazz but I also teach pop, folk, musical theatre, rock etc. Michelangelo once said that the statue was already in the marble and he just took the excess that was imprisoning it out. I believe the same happens with singing: the voice that you want and imagine is already within you, we just need to take away some tension, some shyness, some bad habits and some self-doubt. My lesson is made to harmonise body and mind through singing to enable you to use your body, sound and voice as a storyteller to express yourself and to connect with other human beings in your original way. I start my lessons with physical exercises for body awareness. After that, we move to some breathing exercises and a few face and neck self-massages. Then we start to warm up the voice with exercises to reduce vocal tightness and tension and to improve range, articulation, diction, voice projection. We also work on note accuracy, breath control, strength and emotional expression. Each lesson we test everything that was learnt with a song (I can suggest some and you can also choose). I prepare my students for performances, studio sessions and music exams while strengthening their repertoire and maximising their stage presence, voice delivery and improvisation.
