About SharpenYourWriting
With over 15 years of teaching experience, some of my long-term students have been with me since lower elementary school and are now in high school and preparing for college, while other students work with me for a shorter period, achieve their goal(s), and move on. I work with students with learning differences and gifted students. As students advance, writing and reading comprehension become even more important because they are integral to mastering other subjects. I am an award-winning scholarly history writer. I have helped multiple teachers earn teaching credentials (e.g., final graduate-level coursework and prep for the CBEST exam). Let me know how I can help! Writing is thinking! The ability to write clear, concise, and relevant text is a critical life skill. Reading and analyzing literary works develop critical thinking skills and, hopefully, a sense of empathy. Strategizing how to tackle an assignment builds problem-solving skills. Developing Information Literacy includes understanding how to access information, evaluate its credibility, and use it to solve problems. Understanding Media Literacy is important for navigating the complex media landscape and building a more informed society. Employers want people with strong communication skills. A Carleton University study that surveyed 1,500 people in six organizations found that people spend a third of their job time on reading and answering emails.
As a general overview, my lessons include working with students to learn how to develop any or all of the following skills:

️Organization--the internal structure of the piece
️Voice--the personal tone and flavor of the author's message
️Word Choice--the vocabulary a writer chooses to convey meaning
️Sentence Fluency--the rhythm and flow of the language
