About Maria João

I teach Geography, Biology, Geology, Chemistry and Marine Sciences, usually in English, but I can also teach in Portuguese and French, online or in person. I usually follow existing books, and syllabuses (Cambridge or Edexel curricula), or Portuguese programs, depending on the curiculum I am teaching, and add knowledge that seems relevant and necessary. Online I use a lot of screen sharing, to show procedures in data processing, online research, and videos of things that would normally be done in the laboratory or in the field. In person, I normally use the computer, to do the same things as when sharing a screen, and I try my best to take field classes. I privilege as much as possible, the autonomous research done by the students, online, in libraries, or in the field, and the projects that force them to organize their own work and to find the best solutions for each practical problem they encounter. I live in Tavira, but work in Aljezur. During the academic periods I am mostly in Aljezur during the week and in Tavira at weekends. I can travel to the students' home, within a radius of about 20-25 km.

About the lesson

I have a degree in geology and a masters in environmental management. I started a PhD in geology, which I have not yet finished, focusing on the mapping of sedimentology and organic geochemistry indicators, of lagoon systems, during the Holocene period (last ca. 6-7000 years). The reasons for the interruption are essentially the difficulty of combining financial availability and the time needed to achieve it. I taught in official Portuguese education for about 10 years, after which I dedicated myself to scientific research for about 10 years. I was forced to leave the investigation due to the financial and work instability that exists for researchers in Portugal. I found in international education and, in particular, in the school where I currently teach, conditions that pleased me, in relation to colleagues and students, so I decided to continue, but unfortunately the values earned are not the best. I started teaching online about a year ago and, due to the social isolation needed to fight the Covid 19 pandemic, this became the rule, new tools were added to the ones I already had, and I noticed that in certain situations , students react even better than in class and end up working better and learning more. In addition to science and education, I exercise regularly, mainly dance and canoeing, and I volunteer for environmental, animal and senior university associations.

The price will naturally vary depending on the curricular year to which the classes relate, with the IGCSE, (or the 9th and 10th years in the Portuguese curriculum) being 15 Euros per hour, and the AS and A levels (or 11th and 12th levels) years in Portuguese) will be 20 and 25 euros per hour respectively). Group classes will have different values (lower), and face-to-face classes with my displacement will have a different value, depending on the distance. Field classes will be taxed daily and not hourly, with different values / h, which will include the necessary travel.
