About Justin
Samba entered my life through a childhood neighbor who played constantly during weekend gatherings, its rhythm impossible to ignore even as a kid. Doom metal came much later, discovered during a quieter, more introspective stretch of early adulthood. Learning to appreciate both extremes, playful and heavy, shaped a teaching style that welcomes very different personalities equally. That openness now defines how comfortably I work with both nervous beginners and confident veterans.
Teaching shy first-timers alongside seasoned musicians means constantly adjusting tone, sometimes gentle and encouraging, sometimes direct and technical. I never rush a nervous beginner just to keep pace, nor do I oversimplify things for experienced players out of habit. What I find most rewarding is watching a shy student slowly loosen up through samba's playful rhythm over just a few weeks. That quiet transformation feels just as meaningful as helping a veteran refine a difficult doom metal riff.
I still play both samba and doom metal personally, often switching between the two depending on my own mood. Staying genuinely connected to both keeps my teaching honest and rooted in real musical range. Lessons often shift toward whichever style matches where a student currently stands, emotionally and technically. My hope remains constant, that students leave feeling genuinely heard through their own playing.

Shy first timers need gentleness before technique, so I spend early sessions building comfort with simply holding the guitar without judgment. Samba's light, syncopated strumming enters early here, its playful bounce making rhythm feel like a game rather than a test. Doom metal comes much later, reserved for seasoned musicians ready to explore slow, heavy riffs built on sustained tension. Both styles, despite sitting at opposite ends of energy, demand real listening before technique ever takes over.
As confidence grows, samba's quick, layered strumming patterns contrast sharply against doom metal's deliberately slow, weighted chord changes, and I let students feel that difference physically. Seasoned musicians often appreciate the discipline doom metal demands, since restraint proves harder than speed for many experienced players. Shy first timers instead thrive on samba's forgiving, upbeat nature, gaining confidence through rhythm rather than complexity. I introduce dynamics carefully across both groups, since volume and space matter as much as notes themselves.
I remind every student, new or experienced, that real feel takes longer to build than raw technique ever does. Doom metal in particular punishes impatience, rewarding those willing to sit inside a single slow riff. Songs a student genuinely connects with stay central, keeping practice meaningful regardless of skill level. My focus throughout remains steady, helping each student find real emotional weight in their playing.
