About Doug
Although I live in London, and was born in the UK, I grew up in western Canada, in British Columbia. The outdoors and mountains were my early inspiration when it comes to photography and at 17 I returned to Britain, where I spent a year working in any job I could get that allowed me to explore the Capital with my now very obsolete camera. On my return to Canada, I made my way to Central America where I spent the next few years - off and on - in the region photographing everything and anyone. A lucky break with a photographic agency set me on the photojournalism path, which eventually brought me back to the UK, where I have lived and worked for the past 25 years. I segued into doing more travel photography where I have had the opportunity to work for such publications as The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Guardian, The FT among others; and magazines like National Geographic Traveller, Conde Nast, Wanderlust, Lonely Planet (who I also contribute to many of their guidebooks), and others. I am also an agency photographer for Getty Images, Alamy Images and Adobe Stock. In addition, I presented an online photography show for Adorama TV, who are based in New York.

I look at tutoring a bit like how I look at an assignment. It's all about storytelling. It might be called travel, or documentary or photo-reportage, but the photography is ultimately about people. It is not classroom-based - although a coffee shop might be used. I also believe that everyone starts somewhere, so it's for absolute beginners up to those who are confident with a camera but might need a little nudge in the right direction. This kind of teaching I believe is suited for either one-to-one or small groups of no more than five or six. The timeframe for lessons is flexible, but I do believe that anything less than a couple of hours is probably not helpful. Indeed, typically I teach for a full day or sometimes two days. I have been a professional photographer for almost three decades with my work published widely in the UK and around the world and have been teaching for about 15 years now.
