About Xena
I’m Xena, an artist, illustrator, and educator based in New Jersey, with a BFA in Illustration and over seven years of experience teaching art.
My teaching path has taken a few different forms. I’ve taught in my own college’s pre-college program, working with teens preparing for art school before they’d even graduated high school. I’ve also taught at a Montessori school, running high school art courses in a self-directed, student-led environment, which shaped how I teach now: I meet each student where they are rather than pushing a one-size-fits-all curriculum.
That approach carries directly into how I teach life drawing. Whether a student is picking up a pencil for the first time or refining years of technique, I focus on building a real eye for gesture, proportion, and form, not just copying what’s in front of you.
Outside of teaching, I work across oil painting, watercolor, and zine-making, and I’ve shown in gallery exhibitions including Critical Mass at See Saw Art. I bring that working-artist perspective into every life drawing session, helping students develop technical skill without losing the loose, expressive quality that makes their work their own.

I teach life drawing classes focused on gesture, anatomy, and confident mark-making only using people watching. My approach blends technical fundamentals (proportion, structure, weight) with a loose, expressive drawing style, so students build accuracy without losing spontaneity.
A typical session opens with quick warm-up gesture poses to loosen up the hand and eye, moves into longer studies where we slow down and focus on structure and form, and closes with a critique
What sets me apart is my background: I’ve taught at the pre-college level and in a Montessori high school setting, so I know how to give feedback that actually helps a student improve, not just generic praise. I also work as a practicing illustrator and painter, so what I teach comes from real studio experience, not just theory.
These classes are for teens and adults, from complete beginners to more experienced artists looking to sharpen their fundamentals. All levels welcome.
