About Jos
I trained at the Royal Northern College of Music, where I completed a joint specialism in saxophone performance and composition, the first student to do so in the college's modern history, and I'm currently working towards my ABRSM saxophone fellowship. Alongside teaching I work as a professional performer and composer across the UK and Europe, so what I teach comes directly from doing it.
I teach saxophone, composition, and music theory to students of every age and level, from complete beginners picking up the instrument for the first time to advanced players preparing for grades, auditions, or a career in music. I cover all the major syllabuses, including ABRSM and Trinity, and teach across both classical and jazz. I play soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone. No level is too early or too advanced; I tailor every lesson to the player in front of me.
Teaching saxophone, for me, is about more than technique; it's about helping each student find their own sound. I love the point where a player stops thinking about the mechanics and starts genuinely expressing something. With composition and theory, it's the moment a student realises they can write their own music, not just play someone else's. Whatever a student's goal, my job is to meet them where they are and take them further than they thought they'd get.

Lessons start with strong fundamentals (tone, control, technique) but the real goal is helping you express something through the instrument. We'll work through whatever you're aiming for, whether that's graded exams, a specific set of skills, or simply playing the music you love better. Jazz, classical, or somewhere in between, you'll have the room to develop into a player with a sound of your own.
Every lesson is relaxed but focused. We'll set clear goals, work on the things that move you forward fastest, and break the harder material into steps that actually make sense. You'll always leave knowing exactly what to practise and why, so the time between lessons counts.
I cover both the ABRSM and Trinity syllabuses, so whatever grade you're working towards, you'll be properly prepared. But every lesson is built around you; your level, your goals, and the music you actually want to play. Progress comes from the work between lessons as much as the lessons themselves. Put the practice in, and with the right guidance there's no limit to how far you'll go.

Jos really helped with my sons Maths in a few weeks, he picked up quickly where he lacked and was really informative in the lessons and in between session checking in and setting homework. My Son felt a lot more confident going into his GCSEs after lessons with Jos. Jos was also very honest on if he felt he didn’t need extra lessons and said to not waste money if he was capable of achieving a pass mark at that stage. Would use him again.
Thanks again JosI’ve been taking saxophone lessons with Jos for about six months now and we have been focusing on classical repertoire and technique. I have seen such a big improvement in this time and couldn’t recommend him more!
We asked Jos to give our son a few lessons when he was struggling with his GCSE coursework. His tuition was so helpful! My son found him so easy to get along with and he said that Jos quickly helped him understand problems that he'd been struggling with in the classroom! Really highly recommended by us!
Jos tutored my son online in the last few months before GCSE, as he was struggling with certain concepts and losing what little motivation there had been. Jos was quickly able to put my son at ease, discern the areas of the curriculum on which to focus and then put forward a tutoring plan. Jos is very organised, well prepared and reliable. My son was happy and even enjoyed the sessions.
Jos worked with me to explain four part harmony and other areas of composition I struggling with. He has a way of explaining things that makes it easy to understand. He also helped me with musical theory. He is calm, patient and very personable. I would definitely recommend him if you are looking to improve your understanding of musical composition and theory.
