About Katherine
I am a UK-based experimental composer-performer and sound artist specialising in live electronics, experimental composition, and gesture-controlled interactive systems. I am currently pursuing a Master of Music (MMus) in Composition at the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM).
My creative practice bridges the physical and digital worlds—integrating real-time audio processing, custom software workflows in Ableton Live, and gesture tracking with tactile acoustic textures, physical object friction, and traditional instrumentation. Many of my projects are site-specific, engaging with architecture, spatial dynamics, and audience placement to shape immersive sensory experiences. Through these explorations, I challenge conventional performance boundaries, creating environments where sound, physical material, and human presence converge.
Driven by experimental techniques and conceptual rigour, I regularly collaborate with performers, ensembles, and interdisciplinary artists. My works and live performances have been presented at international festivals and multimedia platforms, including the MA/IN Festival in Rome and the Sonorities Festival in Belfast.
As an educator, I draw directly from my active artistic practice to help students translate abstract creative ideas into reliable, functioning electronic setups. Whether guiding composers through fixed acousmatic works, helping performers build custom stage setups, or developing unique sound design, my aim is to equip artists with both the technical mastery and aesthetic clarity needed to define their own voice.

Every student comes in with a different set of tools, sonic ideas, and creative goals. My teaching is tailored around your current projects, whether you are finishing a fixed-media piece, building an interactive live set, or learning Ableton Live from scratch.
We dive straight into practical workflows: mastering software architecture, built-in tools, synthesisers, sound design, custom signal processing, and parameter/MIDI mapping.
Beyond standard production, we explore experimental composition strategies and non-conventional sound materials. We look at turning everyday tactile objects, physical friction, and acoustic textures into raw sonic material using custom sampling, synthesis, and real-time processing. Whether you are composing fixed acousmatic pieces, integrating traditional instruments with digital processing, or building gesture-controlled live performance systems, we focus on shaping an individual sonic palette.
Rather than following a rigid curriculum, we adapt each session to solve your specific technical bottlenecks, develop your patches, and refine your experimental voice. If you have an unconventional idea, a hybrid setup, or a project in progress, we will build a focused path to get it working.

I’ve been playing music for quite a while - started at fourteen - I’m in my early sixties now (but don’t hold that against me). On trombone, bass, guitar, djembe and ngoni, I’ve played everything from classical to thrash metal, which means I’ve had a fair number of teachers. Katherine is one of the very best of them. With a friendly, relaxed manner, and quick to laugh, she puts you at your ease. But she knows her stuff and, gently, quietly, lets you know when you hit a bum note; when your hand position is wrong; if you’re playing aggressively when you should be loud and warm … She doesn’t take mistakes too seriously, but she does spot them, and knows how to rectify them (which is always a great relief). She has a plan too - my lessons have followed a structured programme based on her own learning in Hong Kong and Taiwan. We started with simple tunes and exercises, but quickly moved on to more complex things. Now, after just six months, I’m working on my first ‘real’ piece from the Chinese classical tradition, and, what can I say? It’s like a door opening onto a whole new world. So, if, like me, you think you might enjoy dipping your toe into a musical universe with over two-and-a-half thousand years of history and a huge repertoire of beautiful compositions to learn from, I can’t imagine a better guide for your journey than Katherine.
I’ve learned Guzheng with Katherine for three years. Her tailored teaching makes complex techniques easy to grasp. I most appreciate her constant encouragement, which significantly built my confidence in performing. She is a patient Super Tutor who truly cares about her students' growth!
She's absolutely a professional guzheng teacher. She explained the steps in detail and clearly, and I could follow them practically. I never expected learning music could be that systematic while staying emotional. Enjoyed it a lot.
Katherine is my Guzheng tutor for 7 months. She has always been patient during the lessons, even though I might not be able to understand the content for a long while. She can also speak a variety of languages including Cantonese, Mandarin, and English.
If you are a beginner at Guzheng and are looking for a highly qualified tutor, Katherine will be your choice.See more recommendations
