About Natalia
Whether you are a young student studying for exams (all the way from pre-tertiary to tertiary level), an adult learner wanting to develop new skills, or an aspiring professional, I can help you achieve your goals!
With 20 years of experience as a professional violinist and 15 years of experience as a teacher, my goal is to help students build confidence, skills and knowledge, and most importantly, to nurture their passion for music.
My biography as a performer:
Australian violinist Natalia Harvey is a sought-after concertmaster, chamber musician, teacher and collaborator, her expertise ranging from contemporary music to historical performance. Her performances have been described as “incendiary” (Limelight) and “fresh, exciting and inventive” (Classic Melbourne).
A recipient of the Holdsworth Family Bach Prize and the Kate Buchdahl Memorial Award, Natalia is a laureate of solo competitions such as the Gisborne International Music Competition (NZ) and the Australian Youth Classical Music Competition. She was a 2017 Emerging Artist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, an Academist a solo artist in the 2022 International Musicians Seminar in Prussia Cove (UK). Natalia has been a featured soloist with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra and with festival orchestras around Australia. Her greatest musical passion, however, is chamber music, particularly string quartets, a passion which has seen her perform with some of the finest ensembles in the Southern Hemisphere, including the Australian Chamber Orchestra, the Flinders Quartet, the Australian Octet and the New Zealand String Quartet, and internationally with the London-based Echea Quartet. Natalia was Principal Second Violin of the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra for seven years, and has had the pleasure of performing as Guest Concertmaster with the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra, the Auckland Philharmonia and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra.
My educational background:
Bachelor of Music (ANU), Australian National Academy of Music Graduate, Concertmaster Artist Diploma Stauffer Center for Strings (Cremona, Italy), Juilliard Orchestral Conducting (USA)

If you need help with aural, theory and musicology exams, want to bolster your skills as a musician in general, or just want to have some fun learning for leisure in a relaxed setting, then these lessons are for you.
Inner hearing is one of the basic elements of music. Developing aural skills essentially involves training the ear to imagine sounds (which is also called “audiation”). These skills are essential to becoming a good musician. If you can sing it, you can hear it! Through singing and listening, students will learn how to:
- Identify intervals and chords
- Develop skills in basic harmony and functional pitch
- Refine rhythm recognition
In the study of music theory, students will learn how to:
- Understand the basics of musical notation, including identifying key and time signatures
For more advanced students, study of theory will involve:
- Harmony and counterpoint
- Figured bass
- Harmonic analysis
If you are or want to begin studying musicology, I am also offering tuition in the history and philosophy of music.
Lesson duration is a minimum of 30 minutes and a maximum of 1 hour, depending on the student. See if it’s the right fit for you with the first lesson free of charge!
My teaching experience is diverse, ranging from instrumental teaching in schools to private tuition. I teach students of all ages and levels of ability, including beginners, adults as well as high-level aspiring professional musicians. I have mentored young musicians in various roles as part of my work with ensembles such as Omega Ensemble, the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra, and the Auckland Philharmonia. I have also worked as a Guest Lecturer at institutions such as Monash University, Sydney University and the New Zealand School of Music.
