About Edward
I’ve spent my life with the guitar. Since I first began noodling around at the age of 8, it’s become an extension of my body. It’s a tool for expression, an object of intellectual inspiration, a friend. The sheet wonder, joy and confidence music has brought to my life cannot be overstated. I want to bring these same gifts to you!
I was privileged to grow up around many talented musicians in Nashville, TN. I first started playing in bands with friends when I was 13 or 14 where I first began to really discover the amount of joy and expression guitar facilitates. I grew up playing all sorts of genres from country to jazz to the gamut of 90s rock (Stone Roses, RHCP, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds). I primarily find myself playing sing-songwriter and experimental work, but feel confident filling in just about any genre. I now perform under the artist name Law Office where I primarily make experimental electronic music and singer-songwriter work, having worked around in many other bands before.

Before we get anywhere, I want to know why it is that you want to play guitar. Music is first and foremost, a means of expression. But there are basic lessons that must be learned to achieve that expression with fluency. This is where I come in.
Do you love guitar music but don't want to be forced to learn jazz? If names like Robert Fripp, St. Vincent, Jimi Hendrix, Johnny Marr, Bill Orcutt, Thurston Moore, Johnny Greenwood, Nick Drake or Blixa Bargeld mean anything to you as a guitar player, you've likely struggled with the same problems I have. These are players that focus on expression, rather than craft. The guitar is not a computer. It's not a precious artifact that can only be played a certain way. The guitar should be tweaked and taken to its limits. It is equally physical as it is harmonic.
WHAT LESSONS LOOK LIKE: My lessons include personalized technical advice, to ensure healthy playing techniques, theoretical teaching so the player can learn to explore the guitar more intuitively and comfortably, and lots of jamming! I teach a mix of technical/ theoretical exercises like scales with a healthy amount of repertoire to guide the student how they can apply what they learn to their playing.
A typical hour long lessons consists of a 10-15 minute warm up routine that consists of some technical exercises, with space for creative playing/jamming tacked onto the last 5 minutes of the warm up. The bulk of the lesson consists of learning whichever piece of repertoire we’ve decided to work on. Earlier in the stages of learning, I tend to pick the pieces that the student can learn to play, because structure is important to seeing fast progress in the introductory stages of playing.
As skills progress, I prefer that the student picks the pieces that we learn together in lessons. Lessons become more theoretically based, as I guide the student through the process of channeling their knowledge of repertoire into a more personalized playing style that offers freedom, exploration and creative expression. This is the ultimate goal of my teaching process!
I offer lessons at my home in Bed-Stuy or I can travel to you in the Brooklyn/Southern manhattan area for an added fee of $15.

Ted's listening skills are foundational to his talents as a musician (and he has a lot of it), but they also translate into what makes for a good teacher. He listens, validates, and guides students - he doesn't come in with a preconceived notion of what the student can do, but instead works to uncover their talents.
Edward is empathic, smart, funny, and patient. He's also a good guitarist. Plus he's a good hang. All that makes for. great teacher.
I highly recommend taking lessons with Ted! His ability to explain complex concepts in a simple way has made learning enjoyable and effective. I already feel like I've made lots of progress since starting and have learned new techniques that felt challenging beforehand. If you're looking to improve your skills Ted's a great choice!
Edward gave me a couple of lessons way back when, and taught me everything I know about scales, which opened all the doors later on in my guitar playing. He was much much more advanced than I, but didn’t make me feel stupid at all. Learned a lot from him.
Edward is an incredibly skilled musician and this translates into his patient, meticulous, and dedicated teaching style. As an absolute (and very nervous) beginner, I felt immediately comfortable with him. Picking up a new skill can be daunting, especially learning from someone so knowledgable, but Edward never let me feel embarrassed or frustrated when I had to repeat parts of the lesson or take extra time. Regardless of your skill level coming in, his lessons are perfectly tailored to your ability. Even the homework he gives is fun AND helpful. I couldn’t recommend Edward more!
