About Syed

Faculty in research methodology courses such as quantitative methods, research design, statistics and data analysis, with multidisciplinary teaching interests. In addition, I have vast experience in research, including roles as thesis supervisor, senior research fellow, coordinator of research, a consultant on contractual projects, and author of journal articles.

✦  I am pleased that students from the University of Oxford, Johns Hopkins University, University College London, Imperial College London, Lund University, University of Oslo, and Stockholm University, got help in the critical appraisal of journal articles, and thesis writing, and wrote lovely reviews for me.

✦  Also, I am humbled by the confidence of the professionals, including an international development professional researcher at the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF), the Managing Director at NSF, senior advisers in Government affiliated institutions, a research fellow at the Imperial College London, a visiting scholar at the Harvard University, and many more, who sought guidance for their professional needs.

In recent years, the academic literature in the medical and health sciences is heavily inclined towards quantitative methods (descriptive statistics, hypothesis testing, OLS or logistic regression models, estimating odds and risk ratios, survival analysis, etc.).

✦  In order to write a good research paper, it is imperative to select quality research, be analytical, and critically evaluate the existing literature in the form of agreement or disagreement with academic values of research, generalizability, the methodology in use, and rationality of estimates. Generally, the CASP, CEBM, or PRISMA checklists are used explicitly or implicitly to do the critical review of the existing literature.

✦  I help students find relevant literature, extract common themes for discussion, explain complex technical processes that are used in research articles to be able to give meaning to the findings, enable students to make critical comments, and structure the contents of the paper.

For effective and contextual guidance, if you feel that I should review your documents—journal articles, the project or the thesis write-up, data sets, feedback by the supervisor, etc.—we can mutually agree on the time that I would need for reviewing purposes, and then we can plan to meet.

Instead of scheduling meetings, you can also ask for the written feedback on completed works: in the form of identification of mistakes and concrete suggestions for improvement in introduction, literature review, methodology, and analysis parts of your project.
